The ' spite say that Porcupine he remem- bered something very important. ale remembered that Pekan the Fisher is almcst the only one in all the Green Forest who doesnt res.-isct those little spears that are called quills. If he is hungry enough he does not hesitate long to get 2 ' porcupine dinner. For some strange reason those little spears do not seem to hurt and make trcvu-ble ior him as theypdo ior most other folks. So Spite. who was up in a. tree. made a iiying leap to the ground and raced over to that slow mov- ing prickly iellow whom he had dis- covered. Right away the Porcupine thought spite was after him. The thousand little spears hidden in his coat suddenly appeared, I-le look- ed like a giant chestnut burr. There seemed to be no place where any one could bite him without getting a. mouthful or those little spears. ,spite jumped over him. taking cure ;to jump high enough so that he iwouild not brush against any of whose quills. 1-ie dodged behind A gtree and ran up it. He hoped that when Pekan saw that Porcupine he lwould stop right there for his din- -ner. Pekan did stop right under his very nose. The question was. was he hungry enough not to mind these .little spears. He knew that he was bound to have some or them work their way into him. They wouldn't 'be cormiiortable. They would be un- Hzomiortable. but they wouldn't do .hlm any harm. He was hungry and ithst was uncomfortable, but he "vwa.sn't; hungry enough. He knew that 1! he couldn't iind g dinner ' elsewhere he could come back and that Porcupine would still be some- wherein the neighborhood. so after hestitating a minute or two to make up his mind Pekan went on after spite. Presently he discovered he had mode a mistake. The little time he had taken to make up his mind about that Porcupine dinner and given Cousin Spite time enough to reach a. hollow log. the doorway oi which was just big enough for him to squeeze through. but not big enough ior his cousin to get through. He was safe. Pesn the Fisher poked his nose in and growled all sorts of dreadful threats. Spite didn't mind. Pekln tore at the log with his claws. He is strong. but he was not strong enough to tear that log apart, He didn't -wate much time. He re- membered the .-ureuvpine and went back. The Porcupine wasn't there.
