I HASZARD’S GAZETTE, JANUARY 12. (For lIaszsrd‘s Gazette.) Ms. Enrros; Sir,-It must be, and is acknowledged, that much apathy has existedin the Christian Church in reference to the command of our adorable Redeemer, to preach the Gospel to every crea- ture. Since that command was given, age has succeeded age, yet how few and feeble compa- ratively, have been the ed’-or-ts of the Church to put the perishing millions of the degraded hea- then in possesiou of the glad tidings of salva- tion through the iueritsofa orucilied Redeemer. It is, however, matter of thnnlrfulness, that, during the last half century, the Church has been somewhat aroused from her slumbers.and has become deeply impressed with the necessity of active exertion. In her aggressive charac- ter, the entreuebments of the grand adversary of God and man have been assailed. the dar places of the earth, which are full of the habi- tations of cruelcy, have been visited by the Missionaries of the Cross, and the word of God has proved mi hty to the pulling down of stroiigiiolds. 'arious denominations of the Christian Church have, in the Mission Field, men oniinently qualified for their important work. The names of some ofthem are lamiliar to as. men who", in the spirit of self-sacrifice, do not count their lives dear unto them, “ so that they may finish their course with joy, and the ministry which they have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify t e Gospel of the Grace of God." Among this number. we with great pleasure advert to Dr. Dull‘. You. Mr. Editor, and many of your readers, are liimiliar with the character and success ol' this very eminent riinn. llaving received by the last Mail, an ex- tract froin the l)octor's farewell address on re- turning to India, after a temporary sojpurn in Scotland, his native land, whither he had gone for the benefit of his health. I take the liberty of asking you to give it a place in your Gazette, b doing so, you will, I am sure, afford much p ensure to man ol' our readers. Earnestly desiring that all the friends of Christian Mis- sions may be imbued with much oftlre Doctor's spirit, I am, Dear Sir, Yours truly, ‘h. Town, Dec. 24. 185-3- diture until sullieient territory has been conquered to supply internally the means and the resources of support. And so is it precisely with Missions to the Heathen. sbours of your Missionaries, eess is granted, you heedlessly or wairitonly fling it to the winds. on, in effect, tell your Mis- sionsries,—"You have faithfully toiled and la- boured, and spent your strength in bringing souls to God,snd in training them for the eflice of evan- gelists; but we are resolved that your strength shall have beri speent for naught. " s it not enough to raise the feeling of moral iinlrgnaiioo in one’s soul, when he is dealt with in this trian- nerl I pray you to excuse my plainness ofspeccli. I cannot help it. He inusi be a traitor to his God and to the souls of the perishing, who, through cowardice or other similar moiive, could be silerri in such scale as llris. lsgaiu ask you. then, How long is this state of things to continue? The Missions abroad have, through God's blcs~ sing, wonderfully prospered. Converts have been and are still raised on every hand ; and when we find iliem prepared to go forth on the right hand aird on the left, as some have already done, are we, instead of being cheered and urged to pro- ceed, to be again chilled by the warning, that we must not employ ihem,—tlist we nriist stand still, -—and by making no further progress into the realms of darkness, must exhibit ourselves a spec- tacle of derision to hellish foes, and of pity and lainentation to the hosts ofliglitl What, then. are we to be next told, tlrsi you are tired with success, since it costs more money, and money is not in the treasury ofthe church 3 To me, who have had snretravelling and wandering through many lands, it has been a rnalier utterly over- whelming to the spirit when I often saw such redundancy of professing Christians, rind when I have been told in reply to earnest pleadings in behalf of a perishing world,—"0, we have nothing to spare.” How depressing has it been to hear this gorgeous lawns. the splendid equipages, the ex- travagant furniture, and the costly entertrrlnnieiits, besides the thousands which are spent upon name- less idle and useless luxuries. It was as much as to say to God, the great Proprietor, who has given it all,—"l.ord, pray excuse Inc, as l with SPEAKING of the apail-.y of Chrisirzin churches in the work of r-v:iii;_,'rel.z'ri«_z lliu world. he ~i:rid:— \Vlr:=t, then. is it Mi.-sioii,as Il.a\e :i!ra_.id_\.' asks-ill It is an a«_v;:r-ssrvo cxperli i« ii rnro air r-or-iny's territory ; and here I may ask, Are riot_ the children ol this world wiser ii. their gt-ner.i-, iron than the children of light?
