Che waves are in Thy hand, And though fierce tempests lower, They own their sovereign Lord’s comminnd, | My ehild, fear not their power. j Fear not-—I lead the way, ; The path, now dark, shail shine | Brightly, with many a ray Of glorious light divine. | Lean on my strong right arm My power to bless thee prove ; lo shield thee from all earthly harm, l'o guard thee by my love. Father, the path is rough, And weary are my feet ; Wilt thou not say enough, Le now thy joy replete. “ah! no, not yet faint one, Wouldst thou to glory rise | Ere half thy life’s short race is run, Or thou hast won the prize. Labor still bravely on, rrast in thy visen Lord ; So shalt thou gain a crown, hy patient toil’s reward. Labor, and watch, and pray, Be bold and firm, and strong, Look for the coming promised day, rhe night will pass ere long. Father, Thy will be done, My heart doth rest in Thee, rhrough the Eternal Son, Who fougbt the fight for me I shall the victory gain Shall conquer every sin ; And ne'er of earthly loss complain, If | may Jesus win Then on the other side, Beyond the pearly gate, Safe from the swelling tide, W here sainted loved ones wait. L'll higher raise the song, Of rapture glad and free, Honor and praise and power belong lo Him who died for me. He Careth. What can it mean? Is it aught to Him, That the nights are long and the days are dim? Can He be touched by the griefs I bear, Which sadden the heart, and whiten the hair? About His throne are eternal calms, And strong glad music of many psalms, And bliss unbaffled by my strife : How can He care for my little life? And yet I want Him tocare for me While I live in this world where the sorrows be! When the lights die down from the path I take, When strength is feeble, and friends eaaiie, When love and music that once did bless Have left me to silence ard loneliness ; And my life song changes to sobbing prayers, Then my spirit cries out for a God who cares, When shadows hang over the whole day long, And my spirit is bowed with shame and wrong, When Iam not good and the deeper shade Of conscious sin make the heart afraid, And the busy world has too much to do, To stay in its course to help me through, And _I long for a Saviour—can it be That the God of the universe cares for me. Oh, wonderful story of deathless love, Kach child is dear to that Heart above ; Lie fights for me when I cannot fight : He comforts me in the gloom of night; He lifts the burden, for He is strong; He stills the sigh, and awakens the song : The sorrows that bowed me down He bears, And lives, and pardons, because He cares. Let all who are sad take heart again, We are not alone in our hours of pain ; Our Father stoops from His throne above To soothe and quiet us by His love. He leaves us not when the strife is high, And we have safety, for He is nigh. Can it be trouble which he doth share? Oh, rest in peace, for the Lord will care. —- ©: me + ee &§ — Women and Money. Times have greatly changed within the last ten years in the generalfreiation of women to money matters. The con- trol of money is a power which is more and more coming into their hands, and fer which they should fee! a deep moral responsibility. An earnest ob- server has remarked that the in- creasing responsibility thrown upon women in pecuniary matters more than any other agency is educating them out of weakness, vacillation and other peculiarly feminine traits. It is the testimony of many bankers and business men that honorably disposed women are among their best and most desirable customers. This speaks volumes of encouragement, and perhaps fully off- sets the occasional woman upon whom business cares have fallen, who seems utterly incapable of comprebending the nature of a business engagement or business transaction; who expects all sorts of privileges and immuuities in business ou the score of being a woman. No more disagreeable customer to have any business transactions with, can be found than such a person. Women of this character discredit not only them- selves but their sex, upon which they bring the reproach of theirown weak- ness and want of perception of the true relution of things. They are‘among the worst stumbling blocks in the path .of woman's progress ; and none feel this more keenly than good and honor- able women whose ambition is to be just and generous in their business dealings; tohave their word as good as their bond, and their bond worth one hundred cents on the doilar. -_- - —_ Statistics of Drink. The English Government has been making careful enquires into the com- parative statistics of drink in the different European countries. The London Tines did not use to be a preacher of temperance and of temper- ance legislation, but it appeals both to tem perance societies and to law against an evilwhich it nevertheless thinks lies too deep to be met by either. In sheer desper.t on, though desperation of a dignified and calm sort, it practi- cally says, though these things can do little goed itis a disgrace and shame nottotry them for what they are worth, That is indeed the final argu- ment ofall who are working for the abolition of the great curse of the age-— they use such means and propose such measures as they think will accomplish most, and they only look with indigna- tion at men who sccff at them for ac- complishing so ittle, but who have no better way to propose. FROM THE SON , “28 Cedar St., New » York, Oct, 28, 1882. * Gentlemen: My father resides at Glover, Vt. He has been a great sufferer from Scrof- ula, and theinclosed letter will tell, you what a marvelous effect Ayers Sarsaparilla has had in his case. I think his blood must have contained thé humor for at least ten yoars: but it did not show, exceptin the form of a scrofulous sore on the wrist, until about five vears ago. From @ few spots which ap- peared at that time, ft gradually spread so as to cover his entire body... [ assure you he was terribly afficted, and an object of pity, when he began using your medicine. Now, there are few men Of his age who enjoy as good health as he has. I could easily name fifty persons who would testify to the facts in his case. Yours truly, W. M. PHILLIPS.” FROM THE FATHER: (roe 3 a duty for me to state to you the benefit I have derived from the use of Ayers Sarsaparilla. Six months ago 1 was completely covered with a terrible humor and scrofuiots sores. The humor caused an incessant and intolerable itching, and the skin cracked #0 as to cause the blood to flow in many places whenever I moved. My sufferings were great, and my life a burden. I commenced the use of the SARSAPARILLA in April last, and have used it regularly since that time. My condition began to improve at once. The sores have all healed, and I feel perfectly well in every respect — being now able to do @ good day’s work, although 73 years of age. Many inquire what has wrought such a eure in my case, and i tell them, as I have heze tried to tell you, AYER’S SAUSAPARILLA, Glover, Vt., Oct. 21, 1882. Yours gratefully, HikaM PHILLIPS,” AYER’s SARSAPARILLA cures Scrofula and all Scrofalous Complaints, Erysip- elas, Eczema, Ringworm, Blotches, Sores, Boils, Tamors, and Eruptions of the Skin.
