A Montreal Woman Sleeps Thirteen Days Monrreat, Nov. 8.—A case which has completely baffled the skill of the doctors at the Notre Dame Hospital for some days past has been that of Mrs. Drolet, 1387 St. Catherine’s Street, who went to sleep thirteen days ago, and only awoke last evening. During the interval she had re- mained in a cataleptic condition, perfectly oblivious of all that was transpiring around her, partaking of no nourishment whatever, and to all appearances dead, save fur the slight heaving of the breast caused by respiration. Fire in a Cold Storage Warehouse, Moxtreat, Nov. 8.—J. H. Hillis’ cold storage warehouse ou William street was badly damaged by fire to-day... The total amount of insurance held by the different companies on the damaged sections and upon the merchandise contained in them, amounts to upwards of $303,000. — This is nearly all placed upon the stock in the damaged fection, as it is said that not over $30,000 was known to be placed upon the building. The losa by water, fire and smoke will reach in the neighborhood of $100,000, sud may go considerably be- yond that sum. A Sensational Story Denied. Loxvox, Nov. 8.—The Standard denies the story published yesterday to the effect that the Turkish police had made a raid on the Sedik Pasha quarter of Conpstanti- neple, were resisted, and that many lives were lost in the fighting that occurred. The Standard’s correspondent telegraphed that he had visited the eentral prison in Con- stantinop!le,having obtained official sanction therefor, and found that rumors of whole- sale arrests are untrue. He adds he is convinced that there has been wholesale exaggeration of the number of Armenians killed in the city. Armenians of Zeitoun are in open revolt against the authorities. Five More Chinamen Lose Their Heads, New Yorx, Nov. 8—A despatch from Foo Chow, China, says that five vegetarian leaders in a massacre Of missionaries at Twasang were publicly beheaded there yesterday morning. Before they were put to death there was an imposing ceremony in the tent of the execution grounds. The members of the American and British con- sulate commission, who went to Kucheng to watch the trials, the Chinese prefect of the provinces, two native magistrates and many Americans and Europeans were pre- sent. There was a procession to the ex- ecution grounds arranged to impress the natives. An immense crowd saw the vegetarians put to death, but there was no disorder. Wealth Made Him Weary, Pirrsserc, Pa., November 8.—A laborer employed in one of the iron mills in Alle- ghany, earning the munificent salary of $1.10 a day for wheeling oré in a wheel- barrow, received a telegram announcing that a relative in Ireland had died and left him $60,000. He left his job, went to [reland, secured the cash and started upon a career of luxury and high living. Two years later he reappeared in Piitsburg, asked for his old position ani went back to wheeling ore. One day another. téle gram came announcing thata relative in England had died, leaving him $20,000. He threw up his hands in déspair. “Hivine!” cried he, “must Oi trow up the job and go over there and waste another year or two in spinding toat? Sik,—I think Mayor Dawson and Coun- cillor Tanton should be thanked by the citizens of Charlottetewn for standing out against vesting such power in the Street Committee as would enable them to ap- peal to the Supreme Court of Canada, in the matter of the Park roadway, thereby incurring the expenses of the appeal, without tirst consulting the people whom they are supposed to represent. Council- lor Haszard wished to cos the resolution passed and “afterwards a public. meeting can be called if it is found necessary.” Did Councillor Haszard think the Mayor was short-sighted enough not to see through such an artifice? Wouid he be the man to call a meeting of citizens who would be opposed to any action he might wish to take in the matter, when he al- ready had the power to do as he pleaved? If l' mistake not, Councillor Haszard is not so desirous of pleasing the “masses” as he pretends to be. The taxes are heavy enough in this city at present st present without doing a work —not at all necessary ~which will increase the tax, notwithstanding Councillor Hughes’ statement that there would be no additional taxes if the resolution were passed. Let the citizens’ money be expended in doing work which will improve the city. Repair the streets, make sidewalks which, instead of being an eyesore, as they are at present, will be a lasting improvement and a benefit to all classes, and when these things are done to satisfaction then we may consider the Park roadway.* James.
