Valerie couldn't remember when she had learned to swim. Ellen. loathed the general untldlness of mom. had been horrified when she first saw the small girl darting like a busy young fish through the water st the school gym. But. even her mother's disap- proval couldnit keep Valarie from the pool. she could shut her eyes at any minute and recapture the feel of the water as it closed around her. 'Sha could hardly speak for joy when she got her first glimpse of the great shining pool at Wide Acres. I Valerie. Mark and Lucy swam every day, even when it. rained. It seemed to Mark to ,' the place somehow. Life had set- tled into a routine. but he was al- most shocked to find that he was happy. It was a phase of life as different from anything he had know as a new world. He stepped into it almost overnight. from the never ending round of Ellen's activ- ities and the homage shs exacted. The prospect would have appal- led him by its dullness. Now he found it merely peaceful. He had come to look on himself as the is- ther of afamily. and he liked it. He thought of Lucy as almost as much of achfldaavaierle. Itnever fsiled to astonlsh him when she spoke to - him maturely.
