The boys in the school number about 1.000. It was at Eaton the tradition arose that “England‘s battles were won on the Cricket grounds of Eton." THE DERBY The race meeting which most ap- peals to the Londoners is undoubted- ly the famous Derby run at ‘Epsom Downs on a Wednesday either a fort- night before or after Whitsun. On a Derby Day all the roads and rail- ways leading south from London are packed with people, and the sight on the course is one never to be forgot- ten. I attended this famous course on the flrstiof June. Our party went in is special ‘bus and spent a most de- lightful day. It was a great sight Lo look at the enormous crowds on both sides of the track, as wcll as the grand stands filled, the motor ‘buses, motor cars and the stands of the bookmakers. It was estimated that there were perhaps 200,000 people present. It wns n, very noisy but well-behaved crowd, and we did not observe one intoxicated person or a quarrel during the whole show. There were, oi' course, a lot of gypsy fortune-tellers, casters, hawkers, bookies, etc., but taken all in all it was a good-natured crowd."
