The day was ideal for a pleasant outing and not- withstanding the busy season quite a number drove nine or ten miles. At the grounds a well stocked 'booth was furnished with delicious ice- cream, candy etc., while the tables spread in the hall nearby fairly groaned under the good things so generously furnished by the ladies. A rifle match promoted by the young men proved very popular, and was largely palronized. About sunset the crowd dispersed. ‘The sum of forty dollars was realized which goes to the Machine Gun Fund. On behalf of the Institute, Mrs. J. E. Dingwell, President takes this opportunity of expressing thanks to the ladies oth- er than members, who so liberally aided us ln supplying cakes and well filled baskets, to the men who so efficiently prepared a place for the picnic and to all others who assist- eil in any way to make our effort a success. |SllN|] Pllll SENUS PBEM Mrs. Robert Macpherson, West Roy- alty, has received fi'om her son, Jos- eph L., some fine views of Shorn- clitfe, and tho following poem, which was written by a private in the 31st Baitalioli. St. John! _ lIlMP SUSSEX Hlllli HUMUH lHll HHH WILL W|llllH IN Sl. .IUHN SUSSEX, Sept. 14.-There are now 28 officers of the 64th in camp. The second in command, Lieut;-Col. H. Flowers, of Halifax, is here but the second major of the battalion, Major G. H. Maxwell, an artillery officer ot' Halifax, is at Kingston taking an in- fantry officer’s field course. Other of- officers are also taking machine gun and inusketry courses and this will continue until all have completed these qualifications for command, while some of the ofilcers are recruit- ing in Nova.Scotia. and New Bruns- wick. The belief is taking firmer root here daily that the 64th will spend tho win- tor in St. John. Little hints are now being dropped in those quarters that ought to know and from very nearly the some quarters come, too, the hope that this idea may not he carried out. Amherst would be preferred if the ,battalion cannot stay at Sussex. The ‘short of the matter is that St. John has got into unpleasant odor as win- ter quarters for any troops. The med- ical ofi"lcer's report on the conditions at the armory when the 20th (New Brunswick) battalion was there from Noveinper ,to June was not satisfac- tory. The other places that were used ,for troops, the exhibition building, where the 6th Mounted Rifles, "I3" Squadron, was before going to Am- herst; the immigration sheds on the west side of the harbor where No. 5 Company Corps were stationed. were only fitted up in a temporary way. The Canadian Railway flonstruction Corps made their own provision in immigration cars. Without undue criticism, too, it may be added, that the 26th, which is mak- ing a good name for itself by other 'measurements of military gooiliiess than is possible in a somewhat “goo- dy-goody" town as St. John has the reputation of being did not always have the discipline that would have avoided one or two things that in themselves were small for men who are not supposed to be eleven hun- dred white angles but which got mag- nitled by the townspeople. Indced the 26th battalion has found the truth of the Shakespearean lines:- l‘low to take E N O°S "Fl1UlT SALT" USE a tea- spoonful to :L glass (or half the spoon, and do not drink until the effcrvescence has nearly sub- sided. There are some who think that if St. John never again has a battalion with a pay roll of $35,000 i1 month in its confines it will be its own fault. But the real military objection to St. John is that there is no field on which more than two conipanles can extend in open order within three miles of the armory and this is so far that it Cannot be reached only once a day. This is on the Lancaster Heights, Fnirville. The 0-ith however, will cer- tainly remain for another month at (lamp Sussex. Licut.-(Toi.
