(From the Rural New Yorker ). The representation of farming machinery at the fair is very complete, and an inspection of it gives a vivid impression of the sweep of muprovem<nt in this department. Most of the leading manufacturers have examples of their best work, but, with one exception, we cannot point te anything very novel that has uot alreaiy been called to the attention of agrieulturists. Our exception refers to the William Anson Wood Mower and Reaper Company, of Albany, N. Y., whose complete exhibit includes a very decided impre: ement in alight reaper that is a novelty, and de- magds special description. ‘The leading fea- ture, as béfore stated, isthe new light reaper, waich not only combines simplicity with strength, <urability and light weight, but has, in addition, a completely new device. ‘This is 4 brake shaped crank, a little to the right and in front of the driver's seat, where it can be easily ope: ated, that works an eccentric which raises or lowers at the same time both sides of the cutter bar and table, and tilts the rakes forward so that they pick up the grain per- fectly. A lever, just back of the crank, throws the table to any desired angle. With this improvement the driver can cut grain at the suria#ve, or at any intermediate distance from the level of the ground up to a height of sixteen inches. While the weight of this reaper is only 750 pounds, it is yet so nicely demeanor to the gallows and died in six- teen minutes. Sanva Fe, July 16. Forty-two cars were wrecked on the North Mexico and Southern Pacific Railroad. Thirteen cars were smashed and three per- sons injured but nene fatally. — nae By referring to our advertising columns it will be seen that the members of St. Patrick’s Total Abstinence and Benevolent Society intend helding their Annual! Picnic on Wed- nesday, the 4th August next, on the grounds of Thomas Handrahan, Esq., Malpeque Read. The success which always attends the Picnics of this Society is a sure guarantee te pleasure- seekers that a day of therough enjoyment will be afiorded the:n on the occasion. ° A YOUNG MAN, belonging to the city, with the intention of combining business with re- ligion, attended ‘* DeSable Sacrament,” hay- ing a refreshment cart largely stecked with whiskey and other intoxicating drinks. On Sunday evening he was discovered by the elders of the Church, busily engaged serving out the ardent to a large and disorderly crowd. The treatment he received at the hands of the elders was harsh but was not by any means « sufficient punishment for his crime. We hope the authorities will further | attend to the matter.
