The Cadre MOLI ee bh Today the Laval “Rouge et Or"; Tomorrowthe world By Nahanni Frey The eight freshman on the UPEI women’s basketball team were initiated into the world of university play in fine style on Halloween weekend when the Panthers captured the Laval Rouge et Or Invitational Tournament. The girls played three strong games on the way to the title, each contest being won by a true team effort. Coach Tracy Ellsworth made many substitutions and every- one gota lot of playing time. It didn’t seem to matter who was on the floor; the team's offen- sive play and defensive play remained excellent. On Friday evening the women defeated Queens 71- 53, led by Jennifer Johnston’s twenty points and the work of Martine Geoffrion and Kate Ellis onthe boards: each pulled down fourteen rebounds. The next day our Panthers thanked their nationally-ranked host team forthe invitation by hand- ing them a61-51 loss, ledagain by Jennifer Johnston with nine- teen points. The highlight ofthe week- end was the final match, against the University of Ot- tawa GeeGees on Sunday. Amy Doorenecamp replaced regular Krista Connolly, but did not disappoint. Doorenecamp nailed three three-pointers as part of her thirteen-pointcontribution, and Laval native Geoffrion led the second half of play with twelve points. The Panthers went on to trounce the GeeGees by over twenty points, witha score of 76-52. Special congratula- tions to Jennifer Johnston who was named Tounament MVP. Next the girls travel to Halifax to take part in the DAL Sub- way Classic. Good luck, girls!
