On the battlefields of Europe, in the homes where only the shadow of the war has fallen Empire Day and the flag which stands for it will both have a deeper meaning than ever before. It will be observed here merely as a holiday, a day to spend in the country orvisitiiig friends or otherwise pleasur- ing. This year it should be more than a holi-hy: it should be a holy day and the Empire’s flag should have a larger place than heretofore in our observance of both the holiday and the holy day. The Empire has had the light of its life for its life. The fight is not over but the collapse of the enemy is in sight, although there is yet room for _much bloodshed and sorrow. Let the flags he spread to the breeze then, tomorrow. Let the City be red with flags and let the children know what it stands for. Let them know what it would have meant to the world, to civilization and to Christianity if the celebration of Empire day had been stopped, if the flag had been supplanted by the German eagle. And let them know also what it has cost and shall yet cost to the homes of the Empire to keep it flyiiig_ _-_pq-1+ _ OUR VACANT SPACES I t has been demonstrated beyond any question that vegetable and flower gardens even within the circum- scribed limits of Charlottetown, can be made. pay. There are niany families in the City who raise most if not all of their own vegetables and flowers and who find it not only a profitable but an agreeable pastime, a healthful diversion in the midst of the ordinary business. While there are many such gardens there are also, spaces which might be converted into gardens and which are littered and cluttered with everything from a battered tin can to the most noxious weeds. At a time when economy and thrift are supposed to bc the watch\vords of all Canadians this is a condition that should not exist. These vacant lots of which there are many iii different parts of thelCity, could easily be converted into profitable gardens. _/\iiy one of these plots, ifhanded to an industrious citizen would pro- duce vegetablcs ciiought for his family and probably something for the market. In this way the unsightly spots in the City could be transformed not ~only into beauty spots but into things of considerable economic value and we have no doubt' that there are many citi- zens who would gladly avail themselves of thc opportu- nity to add something to their regular earnings by in value by audi cultivation, poor the city would be benefited and whole provmce enriched by so much additional produc tion. , : 5 _J . ` In.a"`wallr` around the City a number of these va- cant spaccs maybe seen. On th_e.corner. of Grafton and Pownal Streets ; on Rochford Street, between Richmond and Grafton; on Kent Street between Pow- `nal and Rochford; opposite the City Hospital, and in other places that might be named there are gardens now hidden under debris or grown up with weeds. If offered to those _who would undertake to work them they would add materially to their income and at the sam.; h¢'_m5d¢_much mire valuable to the owner than they are"at_present." ` '-"~ " " 'f' ` , .
