Passing through the progressive town of Mon- tague, we noticed a large plant with the sign “The Mmliakue Furnishing Co. Limited”. Wondering what hey made, we called to find out. To our surprise, we found a large, well-equipped plant, devoted exclus- ively to the manufacture of funeral supplies such as caskets, suits and dresses, erubalmiug fluids and dia- infectaiits; in fact, everything required for that par- ticular work. On looking over their records. we were surprisedto see that. their product is shipped to every Province in Canada, Newfoundland, West Indies, Trinidad, and even orders from South Africa. In addition to the wholesale work, this firm has, for the past sixty-four years, catered to the local funeral requirements, using the most up-to-date equipment and giving efficient service. _ Questioned regarding ‘industries in P. E. I., the management informed us that the t. uble with Is~ ianders is that they are not factory-minded. Many would rather sink their capital info some “hole in the ground" in Northern Canada than patronize home industry. _ The greatest handicap is slow transportation and shortage of raw materials. Competition is as keen in this work as any other line; and only by the loy- aity of employees in turning out the best, can busi-- iiess be built up and maintained. " This plant gives employment to a large number of men and women, and could be greatly extended if the handicap of slow transportation was removed and taxes reduced. so that more could be spent on capital equipment.
