THE THE DAILY BRAMIAER, DECEMBER 21. 1894. THE CASE OF THE CITY TEACHERS. Tne various methods reserted to by the Peters Administration for the purpose raising money to meet their extraordinary corrnpt expenditures of last year, as well , and as to carry on the work of the Govern- ment, have operated with palpable unfair ness in respect to all sorts and ¢ onditions - - aI of men and women. But most of all, they have operated te the disadvantage of the te.chers of this city. These teachers were not only compelled to pay taxes upon their incomes,—there was subtracted from their salaries the sums set opposite their names, as f llows : Mr. Seaman ; iin . «$62 50 Mr. Miller ' i benee . ae Mr. McSwain wii 62 50 Miss Saaddon sine: oe Mr. Smith ihcelaiiaie tie cea 54 70 Sh, SNE oc cniincecuaemasiacians .. 50 00 Miss McKinnon ok aeieiiilia 48 75 Mr C am pbel] ai cae Mr. Howlett ee . 37 53 Miss McN: 3b 635 Miss Fennessey 35 61 Mr. F. We may be sure that if the amounts deductel bs not made up, in some way, from som source, more will follow Oaly those of | our leading teachers, who, by the stress of their circunistances are compelled to re- tain their positions, will remain to teach our schools, and the vacancies must need- be filled by raw recruits. The con-equene will be injuriow: to edurationia this How is this result to be avoided? Pes haps Messrs. Ro gersao:l Prowse will infu- | *' ence the Government to make good the loss. The Government having exacted « heavy income tax from the citizens of Charlottetown ougiit, in justice to Charlotetown, to restore to the teachers ot Charlottetown that which they have taken away fron them. Bat we have learned by experience | that justice is no part of the plan | of the present Almntuistration. There is, we believe, little hope that the influen x of Mesers. Rogers and Prowse will be suf- | ficient to move the Premier and his col- leagues'to right the wrong that has been done. If, then, the people of Charilotte- | town desire to maintain the high characte: of their schools, they must put their hands down into their pockets—already relieved of the amounts of the income tax—anid themselves make good the teachers’ salar- ies. This is a matter for our City School Board to serious!y consider. It was truly emarked to-day by the Rev. Mr. Campbell, | in the course of his allress at Upper Prince Street School, that the teachers of | the Maritime Provinces are harder worked than other classes for the money they get; and we feel sure that the Reverend gentle- man represents the voice of the people of Charlottetown when he expressed the hope | that the position of the teachers of Char lot etown will be improved by additions to | their salaries. rere NOTES AND COMMENTS. —The St, John Sun remarks that Sena- tor Ferguson is a man who will be sure to make himself felt in council. —The Victoria (Australia) assembly has passed the bill taxing unimproved land values. Victoria ought now to prosper. Its wilderness places mu t needs becom: plentiful. —The Patriot states that Mr. Bowell is | “an old Tory fossil.” Its warrant for this | statement is aot given. We humbly submit that a man who, tn this age, has mounted from the position of a printer’s appren i to that of Premier of Canada, is not of such stuff as “old tory fossils ” are maa: —The Toronto Empire says it i: not generally known that Hon. Mackenzie Bowell’s father kept a furniture establis):- ment, and many a day in his early youth | has he turned legs or polished table top’, so that his return to Cabinet making will come natural to him. According to latest report, Mr. Bowell’s hand has not Jost its | cunning, —-Montreal Gazette: Mr. Gigault’s re- ge or the success of the dairy industry n Denmark that Canada has yet abun tant room tor expansion in that direction. Close attention to the peculi arities of the English market is the first condition of success, and on this head the report contains suggestions to which Que- bec farmers will du well to give heed. —The Grit papers, not editor ally, but by means of their special correspon: det nts, are already beginning to excite prejudice | against the Government because Hon. Mr. Bowell is’ a strong Protestant and an Orangeman. Not long since these self same journals were trying to excite preju- dice against the Gevernment becanse Sir John Thompson was a Roman Catholic.
