M.D 12-idtf .-~" 1-_ _ iq MAN BE GENERAL _ SUSPENSION APB-IL 1. iNDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Jan. 24- Whetlier there will be a general sus- pension of coal mining on April 1, when the present wage agreement ex- pires, depends upon the success or the joint conference of operators and min- ers which went into session behind rinsed doors at the Hotel Claypool this afternoon. The miners are re- presented in the conference by the special ‘committee appointed by U10 United Mine Workers. Nearly all of the mine owners of Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio, 'are represented, together with some of thc independents of the western Pennsylvania and West Vir- ginia fields. The demands tq be pre- sented by the miners concerning wag- es and working conditions for the future were agreed upon by the con- vention oi the miners’ organization which has been in session hers the bust two weeks. Some of the _ de- munds are regarded as 9, radical character by the mine owners and there is little possibility of an ag- reement being reached unless the de- mands are substantially modified. Somc of the prominent Pennsylvania and Ohio operators have declined to join in the conference, and this makes it possible that the joint conference may adjourn without doing anything. and that negotiations may then be rnrried on for a later meeting of oD°- rotors and miners for that puri>0B0- There is a firm belief on the part of mhny‘ persons well acquainted with the situation that the operators who are now holding aloof finally will 'be brought into the joint conference, and that if the wage scale is negotiated it will cover the five States of Illinois. Death 'has once more visited the home of James and Mrs. Kelly, city, and for the second time removed from the family a little child. The funeral took place yester- ay. J._ J. and Mrs. Davies entertained it number of their guests of years gone by and some other friends at the Hotel Davies Thursday evening. The affair was exceptionally enjoy- able. .Those who sat down at the table with Mr. Davies, presiding, and Charles Lyons, acting as toastmast~ er, were as follows:-Otto Crabhe, W. S. Stewart, K.C., M.L.A.; C.H.B. Longworth, R. B. Rossborough, Hor- ace Haslard, ex-M.P.; J. A. Mathie- son, Fishery Inspector, Captain T. G. Taylor, Walter Mathieson, Dr. Gon- roy, D. 0'M. Reddin and F.J. Nagh_ The table was a thing of beauty and art, with its snowy napery, its glis- tening cutlery, cut glass, and match- less china and floral decorations/ It may he mentioned that the china used on this occasion was hand- painted, being the work of the late Miss Chisholm. At the conclusion at the first part of the dinner, Toast- master Lyons proposed in felicitgus terms, the health of the host and hostess, Mr. and Mrs. Davies. This week a report appeared in a Halifax paper, and was copied in the Province press that fifteen members of the Madame Sherry Company had been left stranded in Halifax. The report turns out to be incorrect, and is emphatically denied by Mr. Loraine; the business representative, andother officials and members ol the company. They declare that _all the people who left Sunday night held contracts to be returned then, the other people remained over until Wednesday of their own accord, to leave on the P. A. R., boat. Full salaries were paid by the manager, - and the different people all have money, and do not require shows or iccni chcctrcs. 'rhc usual two Weeks notice had been posted up and every- one in the company knew that '£116 show closed in Halifax. The story' at first published in the Chronicle a- rose out of the fact that Arthur Lambert, who was violinist with the Madame Sherry Company. 66001111950- ied by 9, young woman called at the C niclsh0ifice and told a hard luck ow 3:35111); were left stranded in Hali- fax as a result of the company °\0B' ing their engagement there on Satur- day.
