RAYNER. I WOMEN IN FRANCE. Owing to the war, women in Eng- land and France are taking up many odd callings to make up for the short- age of men, but in the country women have always done whatever lies near- est to their hand. ` In the village, the butcher, the bak- er, the candlestlck maker, may all he women, and tliere is at least one small town in Devon in which women form the chief business element. The principal hotel is run by a woman and her daughter; a woman deftly cuts the joints and orders her son about. The bakeress bakes the nicest bread, and her daughter trudges far into the country with two baskets slung on her back, a picturesque fig- ure of a female worker. The wine merchant is a woman who worked up ii. nice little business. \vliile it cheni- ` ist's shop is owned by it woman, to say nothing of the trades which are to be found everywhere, sweetstufi shops, fi-incy shops and the like. France being a. country where unl- versul service is the rule, is nowadays depending largely on the work of ivoincn; but even in times of peace there were places where they were the chief citizens. At Froissy, in the Department of the Oise, most of the public appointments are held by wo- men, and will he until the present hol- ders die. ' There is a postmistress instead of a postmaster; the telegraph depart- ment is ru~\_ by a woman, a station mistress directs the portees at the local station; a lady barber cut the hair of the community; and the town crier also taks "ess" on to the name of her calling. DUSKY SOLDIER SMOKERS. Like most soldiers the native troops of India who are fighting with the Allied forces in France, ure lnveter- ate smokers. They do not, how- ever, sliare Tommy’s love of pipe or cigarette. for they have peculiar means of their own of enjoying tobac- co. One of their methods is to twist an oak leaf into a conical shape, fill it with tobacco, and draw the smoke through their clasped hands. Another trick is to bore a horizontal hole under the surface of a bank, place the tobac- co at one extremity and with their hands clasped over the other inhale the smoke between their thumbs. This is probably the most 'primitive way of smoking known. The Gardwals have very simple liab- its. They have practically no fear of wild beasts, and in their native coun- try they hunt the tiger, leopard and bear, armed only with sticks and knives. The home of the Garwals is in the Himilayan district, which is famous for its beautiful scenery and the excellent hunting to be obtained on its mountain sides. These dusky soldiers are fearless fighters. ____.,,__ A HAUNTED LIBRARY. One of the most curious "hauntings" occurs in a northern castle of great antiquity where Mary, Queen of Scots, rested when she was being conveyed a prisoner through England. It is mani- fested jn the library and takes the form that the books cannot be kept in order. They move about or are moved about from shelf to shelf. If you ar- range the works ,of Shakespeare in correct drder on one shelf, by next morning the volumes are scattered anyhow on different shelves. This has gone on for years. At different times the library has been searched and lockedf watches have been set all night servants have come and gone, but the mysterious occurrznee goes on and is vouched for not o ly by the family but by guests who have stayed in the house. There is no legend to account for it.-London Mall. Lrrrtz emi. Ldokso AT rr A miserly landlord was going round collecting his rents the other day.
