A number of persons spoke in opposition to the propos- ed amendments mostly on the grounds that they tended to, more than ever. centralize authority fr. Charlottetown and that they ignor- ed the fact that there are two Pio- gressive Conservative Associations in Prince County. Resolutions passed affirmed con- fidence in the leadership of the Hon. Students Seeking Work Although the National Employ ment Office has made extra efforts to place all students, who are lock- ing for work, Ic-clil officials say there are still about twenty-four stuents with applications on file, who have not been placed. Dm- ployers have found, according to the local office, that the students are fine workers, whether employ- cd as labourers, salesmen or in any other capacity. ' Road Work Highway maintenance, and con~ struction work on the Provincial highways is absorbing many of the unemployed people in the rural sections. At the present time, the local office is paying Unemploy- ment Insurance benefits to only eighty-five people in the rural areas of King's and Queen's Coun- ty. In fact. the total number of claims at present. has fallen from a peak of one thousand in Gilli-twill" ter, to just over two hundred at the present time. This total in- cludes claims being paid in Char- lottetown, and throughout King's and Queens Counties. _ Domwtie Help It is just about as difficult to secure domestic help, as it is to secure farm labour, 5nd the optic; has many unfilled applications for domestics._lt was pointed out by the local officials that contrary to the opinion held by many people, that girls who refuse this tyipe of work Li it is suitable are not per- mitted Io draw Unemployment In- " and Supplies surance Benefits. Any person who refuses suitable work is disquali- fled. Furtheiirnoreflt is the persst- ent policy of the Office to offer suitable employment to all people drawing Unemployment Insurance Benefits. Disqualification ForBenefits In every case where it is con- sidered that the man or woman should accept the enipioyirnent of- fered, taking for granted of course, that he or she is capable c4’ rel‘- forming the work, disqualification follows refusal to accept such of- fers. It has happened. however. that over and over again that Tanners in the rural areas have: individual is drawing Unemploy-l ment Insurance Benefits and has refused work. Unfortunately un- less farmers in such cases report] the matter to the Local Office, or place an order for a. man, the Lo-i cal Office is unable to take any action to suspend payments or dis- qualify the individual who may refuse work. It would be very helpful if all such cases were re- ported to the Local office, the Charlottetown officials said, I l Gradually, girls who have grad-I uated from commercial schools in the past few weeks are being placed in employment. The Wom-I en's Division of the Office is hav- ing one of its busiest periods for the time of year since the Office opened. More and more employers ore using the service and the chief difficulty at present is to kee abreast of the orders that have been filed. These orders come from all over the Province; from rural areas, and frcm as far East as Souris and the National Park and Hunter River at the other extreme of the area under the jurisdiction Women's Division of the Charlottetown Office.
