In the past. these very expensive furs have como chiefly from lambs of the Karakul breed of shocp of west-central Asia. “Ii/proximately 4.000.090 skins have been imported annually. Thcrr are a few thousand of these sheep in the U.S. Botwvon 1909 and 1914. about 70 were im- ported. Inlporls were pru-hiirliii wbenlit was found they were bringi-nlz with them certain animal diseases. Since only the skins of nevx-born lambs are valuable. the increase in this stock has been vt-ry slow. There were in 1914, only about 30 ewes, too few lo- mother an Amt-r- lcan race of Karakuls, Consequ- ently the rams were mated with ewes of Scotch Highland and Navajo Indian stock. The first lambs were almost worthless as far as their fur was concerned. Their pelts wero worth only about 80 rents Mich. But the ewes of this breed were iiiateil with pure-bred Kai-akul rams. and the second zcneratlon volts‘ .how- ed a decided improvement. As a result of six similar crosses. a breed has beeTl produced which is fifteen sixtcenths Karakul.
