The higher classes showed a remarkable degree of proficiency in all the subjects in which they examined. Difficult passages were read with ease and fluency; analysis given with exactness; and grammatical construction nicely defined. A knowledge of Scripture History, which proved careful mental culture, was shown . and we were hardly prepared for the des gree of perspicuity and ease with which a series of lessons in Botany were disposed of. Miss French handled her subjects in the course of the examination in such a manner as to leaye no doubt of superior qualificas tionsasa Teacher. The various subjects, were scrupulous other than those we have mentioned, were very creditably disposed of, and, as we ex- pect to be furnished with a prize list or one giving the names of those exhibiting the highest proficiency in the various classes, we will defer a longer notice till we are favored with such list. OBITUARY. We are sorry to have to record the death of one of our oldest citizens, John Lawson, Esq., Q. C., Recorder of this city, and for many years a prominent member of the lega! profession in this Island. Chose whoremember him in his best days describe him as one of the finest speakers who ever practised in our courts, and there are very few men in the community who could compare with him in educational at~ tainments. He wasa polished and vigorous writer, and one of those rare characters, a | thoroughly well read man, who was interest- | ed in, and could speak with ability upon any lo his friends eulogy would seem superfluous, They will not cease to re-~ member the fine looking happy old gentle- man as he loved to sit talking of books in his pleasant and animated way. B., and vicinity on Tuesday evening, between six and seven o'clock. The lightning was more vivid than is usually seen there, and many were alarmed at its apparent proximity. We have heard of no damage being done in town, but at Oak Bay the lightning struck the new Rectory which has recently been erected by the members of the Episcopal church there, and injured it severely. The lightning first struck one of the chimneys and passed through the roof, tearing off the shingles, it then ran along several of the rafters, tearing them to splinters, and down in the main house and L in three directions, injuring toa large extent almost every | room in the house, aud passing out of the clapboards in three directions. In the room occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Wain- wright and iofant, two of the walls were broken, and the escape of the inmates from injury or death is almost miraculous.
