Tue Supreme Court resumed its business in this County this forenoon. The trial of Angus McDonald, Patrick Brenan and Gerald Sweeney, indicted for riot, has been called, and the Court is at present engaged in empanneling a jury. THs supposed successurs to the S'amese Twins, recently born at St. Scholashque, Quebsc, turms out to be a child with two heads. Mr. Ludroinnu, its father, refused $25,000 from two parties from New York who wished to secure it for five years. We lay before our readers the very able judgement of Judge Alley, as to the lia- bility of persons to. be rated under ‘‘ The Public Schools’ Act,” for land in a School District in which the person owing the land does not reside. The decision is that there is no liability under the Statute. On Friday last at Newbury, a town a few miles from Ottawa, a boiler in Robertson's mill exploded with such violence as to shake the earth for miles, shattering a mill with machinery to fragments. Alex. King and George Harris were buried in the ruins. King died soon after. Harris is badly mangled, but is improving. Ow Friday last Jesse McConnell, a brake” man of the Canada Southern Railway, fell between the cars, and the train yassed over ‘ him. Before he was found another train wont over him, mangling his body beyond recognition. The remains were gathered into a amall box and taken to St. Thomas, Ont. Tue Grand Lodge of Freemasons of Eng- land, Lord Carnarvon presiding, has unani- mously passed a resolution refusing to re- cognize as a freemason any person initiated in a Lodge whose belief in God is denied or ignored. This refers to the action of the Grand Orient of France, which recently eliminated an article expressing belief in 10d from its ritual. Tue St. John Telegraph has the follow- ing comment on the coming visit of O’Dono- van Rossa to Toronto :—‘‘Mr. O'Donovan Rossa, the skirmishing fund man who in- tends to blow up the British Empire with dynamite, is going to Toronto to talk treason on St. Patrick’s Day. This Fenian scoundrel must think that rope is scarce in Toronto, if he expects to leave the capital of Ontario without being hanged.” Ax the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court, this forenoon, the case of John Murphy and Michael Duffy, for assaulting Gerald Cava- nagh in December last, was on trial. It was postponed until to-morrow. Walter Rice, charged with the larceny of a load of coal from the schooner Raven, was, after the examination of eight witnesses, dis- charged on his own recognizance, to appear when required. An Ottawa dispatch of the 8th says :— ‘‘Ten of the striking Welland Canal labor- ers were arrested yesterday at Port Col- borne, on a charge of intimidation and in- terfering with men at werk. Eight were corivicted and sentenced to jail—two for 60 days and the rest for 30. Work has not been resumed. Ten were arrested at Hum- berstone aad are being tried. Fifty labor- ers marched from Allanburg to Section 20, yeaterday, and stopped the teamsters from filling and dumping the scrapers. Henry Daves & Co. yielded to the demand for $1.25 per day, and their men resumed work. ‘ae new Minister of Militia, Mr. Jones, is suffering severely in Parliament, both from friend and foe. is openly-expressed dis- loyalty some years ago, appeared in curious contrast with his position in the Cabinet to-day. Mr. Jones feels this acutely, and is never wearied himself, and cannot think that he wearies any other person with his protestations of innocence. Mr. Blake, for once, has got tired of Mr. Jones and his manderings. In the House of Commons on Friday, when Mr. Jones was dilating on his favorite topic, Mr. Blake cried to him from hiv seat, ‘‘What an ass you are making of ourself!” Jones did not, of course, be- lieve it. At the peace demonstration in Hyde Park to-day, Bradlaugh and Herbert made speeches and evened resolutions in favor of peace, which passed immediately. Soon afterwards the supporters of the Government policy arrived in force, and the meeting was declared dissolved; : radlaugh was cudgelled, and fled in a cab. According to the largest estimates, the number of persons who attended the peace demonstration was about 2,000. hey were hustled about the Park and finally ejected by a larger and disorderly mob. Stieks were freely used, and several men were slightly hurt and taken to hospitals. The mob then separated, cheering for Lord Beaconsfield and Musuras Pasha. A large crowd cheered and groaned before Glad- stone’s residence ; Mr. Gladstone and his wife, when going to church, were obliged to take refuge in a friend’s house, whence they were escorted by the police. _ Prince Tesk was mistaken for Count Schowvaloff, Russian Ambassador, and in- sulted and jostled by the mob. Mr. Gladstone has written a letter to the Greenwich Liberal Association, stating that he would not contest Greenwich at the next general election, in consequence of a grow- ing sense of his inability to discharge all the duties that constituency may reasonably ex- pect from one of its representatives. CONSTANTINOPLE, March 10. Raouf Pasha and General Ignatieff started for St. Petersburg to-day. Hobart Pasha will isi for Crete on Tuesday. The visit of the Grand Duke Nicholas to the Sultan has been abandoned for the pres- ent. The report is again current that the Aus- trians are about to occupy Bosnia and Herzegovina. Lonrpon, March 11. The Times’ despatch from St. Petersburgh on Sunday says that the general impression produced by the Czar’s remarks at his re- ception, that day of the Diplomatic Corps, is decidedly pacific. A special to the Times from San Stefano says that it is stated that Rouf Pasha will ask a remission of 30,000,000 dollars of the indemnity. The Sultan has ratified the treaty. It is reported that the last clause is that Russia and Turkey will regard the treaty as sol idairc, implying that they will not recognize the right of any power to interfere with the terms except as regards the qnestion of straits and the settlement of the boundaries of Montenegro. A Vienna despatch to the Daily News announces that the peace congress will open March 31st. It is proposed that the three Emperors meet after the congress. The Swiss Guard of the Vatican on Wed- nesiay demanded three months pay, usual on the death of the Pope. A despatch from Panama reports that a fire occurred there on Wednesday by which the Grand Hotel and other large buildings with many residences were destroyed. Losses reported at $560,000 ; insurance one- half. The cost of the Grand Hotel was $100,000, insurance $80,000. Later. —Twenty-six buildings burned at Panama. ‘The hotel is saved. Lonpon, March 8. In the House of Lords this afternoon the Lord High Chancellor, in response to the question asked by Lord Hammon, said that the object of territorial waters jurisdiction bill, now before Parliament, was not in- tended to go any way beyond established rules laid down by International waters re- specting the extent of the territorial juris- diction.
