A LL ee THE DAILY HX * a Ft ee 2 a 12 1825. mY Simple Home Remedies | 4 _— , Half a teaspoonful of common table | ; ‘ sa!t dissolved in a little cold water and ha drank will instantly relieve “heart | ; burn” or dyspepsia. If taken every | i morning before breakfast, increasipg the quantity gradually to a teaspoonful e fsalt and a tumbler of water, it will in a few days cure an ordinary case of | ey lyspepsia if at the same time due ate | tention is paid to the diet There is no} ; better remedy than the above for cone | stipation. Asa gargle for sore throat | it is equal to chlorate of potash, and | : s entirely safe. It may be used as} i. often as desired.and if a little is swallow -d each time it will have a_ beneficial | ffect on the throat by cleansing it and | allaying irritation In doses of one to four teaspoontfuls in half # pint to a pint of tepid water it acts promptly an emetic, and, in cases of poisoning, is | as always on hand. It is an excellent re- | medy for bites and stings of insects. It | is valuable astringent in hemorrhages | particularly for bleeding after the ex traction of teeth. It has both cleans ing and healing properties, and is there- ; fore a most excellent application for} superficial ulcerations. Mustard is an- | other valuable remedy. No family should be without Two or three teaspoonfuls of ground mustard stirred into a halt pint of water acts as an emetic very promptly, and is milder and easier to take than salt and water. Equal pitts of ground mustard and flour, or meal made into a paste with warm water, aad spread on a thin piece of muslin, with another piece of muslin | laid over it, forms the indispensable | ‘mustard plaster.’ It is almost a speci- fic for colic when applied tor a few mioutes over the pit of the stomach.” For all internal pain and copgestions | there is no remedy of such general | itilitv. It acts as a counter-irritant by | drawing the blood to the surface ; hence | in severe cases of croup a small mus- tard plaster should be applied to the back of the child's peck. The same reatment will relieve almost any case of headache. A mustard plaster shou!d be moved about over the spot to be act- | ed upon, for if left in one place it is blister. A mustard plaster acts aswell when «a considerable dis- tance from the affected part. An ex cellent substitute for mustard plaster is what is known “mustard leaves.” They come a dezen in a_ box,! vod are about four or five inches | long They are perfectly dry and will keep for a long time. For use it is only necessary to dip one in a dish of water fora minute, then apply it. Common baking sodais the best of all remedies in cases of scalds and burns. it may be used at the surface of the burned place either dry or wet. It is the best application for eruptions caused by poison ivy and other poiso- nous plants, as also for bites and stings ofinsects. Owing to colds,over-fatigue, anxiety and various other causes, the urine is often scanty, highly colored, and more or less loaded with phosphates, which settle to the bottom of the vessel on cooliag. As much soda ascan be dipped up with a ten-cent-piece, dis- solved in halt a giass of water, and drank every three hours, willsoon remedv the trouble ’ +? ~ liable to as - ™<s Consult With Your Wife. ‘There are maoy men who seem to msider their wives ss capable of understanding nothing but what relaces to dress or cooking, and they would smile ut the folly of talking with them on any matter which relates to business. We ure aware that there are women of whom it would be folly to make con- fijants in such things ; women who are reckless and thoughtless enough to urge their husbands into all sorts of extrava- vance, that their pride aod vanity may be gratitied, regard!ess wholly of re- sults, and would pettishly refuse to listen toany explanation of business affairs ; yet we think even such would be far fewer if, from the first, husbands were accustomed to confide to them their plans and to seek their advice. If a wife be al ways treated as not fit to know anything of her husband’s affairs, if her questions receive only cold and half-scornful replies, it is not to be wondered atif she soon ceases to feel any interests or have any thoughts about them ; and if, by-and-by, it should be foundin a practical way that she does not seem to “‘know much of the value of moaey, or “how much it costs lo get it,” or even “where it comes trom,’ the reticent husband need not wonder. The intuitions of a woman ure bet'er and readier than those of a man; her quick without reasons are frequently far superior to a man's most careful deductions, He is & Wise husband who makes use of his wife's shrewdness and womanly saga- city, the fruits of this faculty. Many and many ®& man would have been saved from ruin had he constulted his wile | and acted upon her advice before he em- barked in his enterprises.
