Letistlalk it Over A Prince County Viewpoint ' by ..d.. THE SPELLING TYRANTS One way tn make a poor speller still worse is in try to make him learn to spell cui'rect.ly every word he uses. Poor spellers are so be- cause they take along time to learn to spell words. That's pretty obvious. isn't it? Suppose they come. up to Grade VIII or IX with a vu;v small collection of words which they can spell correctly. Then some energetic teacher takes them in hand and resolves that they shall spell correctly every word they use in written work. even ii; geogrtipliy. geometry. and such subjects. For poor spellers that is setting an impossible task, one that will give the victim a very bad case of spelling indigestion. It's like taking charge of a boxer who has neglected his road work, and in oiclcr to bring him up to schedule. get him to run 100 miles the first day. we were reading an interesting book, and insisted that we learn to spell every word we came across in our reading. our interest in the book would quickly die. We'd feel very much lik thi'ou'ing the bool: in the furnac and going for A walk. 0 O I In English there are three voc- abularies: a reading vocabulary the amount of words you can rec- ognize and know the meanings of in the context; a speaking vocab- ulary. the amount of words you can pronounce correctly and know the meanings of; and a wiitlni: VOCKl)lllal'y. the number of words you can spell in addition to know- ing their use. A person's writing vocabulary is ncarly always much reading vocabularies. l Of course. it is true that correct. pronunciation will help spelliiig.i and vice vcrsa. but if you can gun. I a natiiriilly poor speller to learn! to spell a reasonable percentage oil the words in his writing vocabul- nry. you are doing pretty well. you expect him to spell corrccily all the unrds in all his text books. you can work your the task of trying to make him do this. and in the and you will be doomed to bitter disappointment. Spelling iexts are carefully grad- ed to make ti student proficient in spelling the words of his writing vocabulary. Readers are not If iliey were. you wouldn't need the spellers at all. Nine-tenths oi the information we get in the post- school world is obtained from read- ing or listening. and if you know what the words mean. you will gain the information whether you can spell them or not. .-4 STRANGF.
