Shows l4 Clean Heels To Thebaagd North Atlantic Champion Sails True To Form In First Race For Fisherman’s Trophy To Trim American Challenger By More Than p3 Minutes. By A. D. Merlrel, Canadian Press Staff Writer HALIFAX, N. 8., Oct. lil-Blu-i-i nose, Canadian qu_een of the North] Atlantic fishing fleets, gave her Un- iiéa States challenger, Gertrude L. ‘Iliebaud, such a drubbing in to- d*y's race, sailed under conditions of wind and wave, best suiting the Gloucesterman, that the question of superiority as between the two vessels seems tonight to have been settled for all time. Tomorrow, Cap tain Ben Pine, brilliant ‘skipper of the invader is leaving for his home, on account of illness, relinquishing the wheel to Captain John Math- eson, his second in command. The Canadians elapsed time for the 36 nautical miles course sailed today- was 5 hours, 53 minutes, 49 sec- onds" the Americans, six hours, twenty six minutes, fifteen seconds. The Biuenose beat her rival by 33 minutes, 26 seconds. Following the contest the crew of the Bluenosc marched over to the Thebauds dock and gave the Glou- cesterman three hearty cheers. To- night both crews will forgather at a banquet given by the trustees of the trophy. THE START Wily Captain a Ben outgucssed Captain Angus at the start and shot . ' over ahead after running down tho lline on the Canadians weather. Fifteen secoridsaiter the gun had flashed Thebaud crossed, followed by Bluenose twelve seconds later. i Immediately Angus attempted to /_.. work to weather and a lufling match ensued which caused both‘ schooners to shave the bell buoy marking Point Pleasant Shoals, at the southern tip of the Halifax peninsula and sent them danger- ously close to the reeks, lining the western shores of the harbor. Angus at this point had crept up to weath er of Thebaud and was taking h" wind. But Pine had sufficient way to keep lufling Bluenose inshore. Finally Angus called for sea room. The Bluenose was a scant two ves- sels length from shore, her rival, a biscuits toss on her lee. Members of the rival crews were exchanging qulps as they worked like Trojans ‘to keep the vessels from fouling each other. The pilot aboard the ‘Iliebaud asked when the Blucnosc wanted sea room and the reply "now." The Thebaud immediately bore away. Angus thereupon flat- tened his mninsail. jibed and went astcrn of the 'I‘h:baud, which now became the weather boat, With tho positions reversed Pine continued to Pair Of A give Angus trouble for a few min- utes but the Bluenos; proved too much for the invader and sailing through her lee, established a clear lead. Angus could probably have sailed through Ben's lee at the start, but the urge for the weather berth was not to be denied, involv- ing him in a yachtsmcns iufiing match. "Monkey shines" it was termed by some of the veteran salts aboard the Lady Laurler, that cost him many precious minutes, when min- utes were needed, near the close of the race. For despite a spanking sea and smooth water, the wind backed and hauled from nor nor west to nor, west to north during the contest, giving the vessels con- siderably more windward work than the sailing committee thught they would have when the selected course calling for aJ run down the wind to Halifax lightship, sixteen miles from the starting line. At the inner automatic buoy, six minutes from the start, Bluenose had a lead oi’ one minute, five seconds. at the lightship she had established a lead of five minutes twenty five seconds, and on the thresh home she continued to foot faster and point higher than her rival. Al; the southeast automatic buoy, where the times were not taken, for the reason the schooncrs were not required to actually roundi the mark, it was estimated she had a lead of two miles, at the inner automatic where the times were also unavailable, for the same reason, she, had a clezri lead of'two and one hall’ miles. Bea-ting up the harbor the Blur»; nose ran into lighter winds and for a time it seemed doubtful if she could make the finish line within the time limit of six hours. But she, succeeded with a bare six minutes‘ to go. Thebatid crossed the line 33 minutes later. 33 Pass Exam. OTTAWA, Ont., Oct, l9.
