TRY. “ An Irish-American Episcopal cler- gyman,” in a letter to a New York newspaper, puts forth the following interesring, if remarkable, claim that Her Majesty the Queen is descended from the ancient Kings of Erin. He says: “The proposed visit ef Queen Victoria to Ireland is a most interest- ing event, and if properly managed may be of the greatest consequence to the present well-being of the British Empire, and to the future of Ireland as a part of the Enipire. It is a remarkable evidence of the dullness of the English mind and of its want of comprehension of the senti- ments and motives which govern men, that it has never been able to enter in- to the feeling which the Irish have for their past history and its associations. Ireland itself—its great past, of learn- ing, piety, poetry, chivalry and devo- tion to the ‘old blood ’—England has never been able to understand. Hence no offer has ever been made on the part of the sovereign, or of the royal ptinces, much less of the English ministers, to sentiments of hereditary affection and loyalty which still linger in the Irish heart for its old | dynasties and ‘ old blood.’ The Queen, for example, is of the old Irish royal strain. She is not only a Guelph and a Stewart, she is one of the reyal O’Connors. The last Irish sovereign of the whole island was Roderick O’Connor. His sons were slain. His daughter married Hugo de Lacy. Their daughter married a De Burg, Earl of Ulster ; from them des- cended Ellen wife of Robert Bruce, King of Scotland. (Curiously enough the mother of Robert Bruce was a des- cendant of Eva, daughter of the King of Leinster, while his wife was the des- cendant of Roderick O’Connor, the last of the great kings, a supreme mon- arch of Ireland). ‘he grand-daughter of Robert Bruce, the Princess Mar- gery, married the Lord High Steward of Scotland, and through her the — ALMOST A MIRA‘CLE. —_— -- Strange Case of Kidney Disease Reported at Smith’s Falls. From thence it is easy to trace how the Royal blood of Ireland, Scotiand and England meets in the person of the reigning Queen Victoria. I venture the statement that If the Queen on arriving in Dublin were to of England, but as the daughter of the old Irish monarchs, constitutionally representing them, and appealing as a daughter of the last of the royal O’Connors to my kinsmen and subjects there would be a shout of Irish loyalty and chivalry which has never been heard since the days of Tara.
