A mysterious cave, or what now appears to be a tunnel, was accidently discovered on a property recently owned by Mr. Scott on what isknownas the River road, at Acadia Mines. last week, says the Truro News Several small boys were playing near the rivers bank chasing a eqnirrel. Tie, located him in a stump or rock pile ani set their dogs to work to “dig him out’. Aiter a few moments of digg:ng the earti auddenly caved in taking the dog with ir, some four or five feet. The mysterious “cave in” was soon known and men wit. shovels soon unearthed a tunnel, about siz feet wide, stoned up with flat stones on both sides, and six feet high roofed over with smoothed hemlock lumber, which ap- pears to have been there over 100 years, With the aid ot torches, etc., the mea traced thetunnel thirty feet from the river bank. Nothing was found in the cave that far, except a broken shovel and the mystery cannot be accounicd for. The river road was built some thirty-six years ago, but none of the o!d seetlers in Colches- ter county who have teen interviewed know anything of the digging or existence of such an excavation, or Can inany way account for it.
