BRITISH PARLIAMENT, Government Defeated in the Commons. Lonvon, June 19. In the House of Commons yesterday, during the debate, the Fsctory Bill was amended to prohibit children under eleven years of age from working —defeating the Guvernment on that point by a majority of sixteen, This amendment will effect nearly 200,000 children in the Kingdom now employed in manufacturing districts. It is a huwnanitarian reform and was opposed by the bulk of the operatives, who profit by their offspring’s labor. : The News says that the blow is bothdam- aging eni ignamonious, and that not even the resignation of Home Secretary Matt- hews will save the Government from dis- credlt and disgrace. The Chronicle says: ‘* Truly Secretary Mathews is a costly luxury tothe state. The defeat of the government will seriously damage the prospects of every Unionist candidate in the next general election.” Imperial Federation. ——o Lonpon, June 1d.
