'me UPEI Sun, Sept. 23,1982 _ByMQ<EYPIPCE In the only league game played by a UPEI team this our 3 Lady Panther Field Hockey team started off in a most successful fashion as, they - outscored Les Dames from the U. de ancton 3-2 with Libby Baldwin contributing a hat trick. .we believe the first three goal performance in UPEI historv. The win was made more impressive V when we learned that, on the following day, the Monoton team beay Acadia 2-0. We write this on Monday for a Tuesday deadline which gives an opportunity for unusual tense Structures so we y hope you'll understand us .' when we inform you that the team played Mount Allison in SaCkville tomorrow night! Our girls (Oops! Sorry Barb) Our women play in Antigonish and Halifax Sat. and Sun. but will be back here the following weekend. The Panther Soccer Team has played a couple of practice games against a local squad, wirming 6—1 and 3—0. In the' first game Scott Neil (The braw lad is back form Scootland) booted in three while Andy Cameron, Bob Macmillan and Glen Sniley added singles. , This weekend the team travels to play Dal and am. We'll contact our Halifax confidant and will know by next issue if our boys are as good a we think they are. Next hone game will be on 3 Oct. JOC In Panther hockey we haven't nuch info as practices haven‘t started yet. We believe that with many l'nldovers fron last season, when we sould have been in the national finals, we will be STRONG particularly up front and in goal. Neucoxers Tony MacKenzie, Ronnie Carragher, Don MacKay (possibly Robbie Forbes?) fron goal junior rands along with Ted Turner fron Calgary teamed up with last year‘s Doug Currie, Norman Beck, Trevor Crawford and others should give opposing netninders some misersble moments. We'll have Avalino Gomez and Dave: Reid in goal and this xould be the strongest corbination in the league. Defense, however, has been hard hit by graduations. Garth Arsenault will probably be moved back front the forward line. Terry MacKenna is a surprise and welcome returnee, Jeff Lantz and Rob Mazooka will probably round out—the known defense corps. (We particularly welcome Jeff. We are on the ' Red Cross executive and his father is President. Last year when we'd excuse our- selves fron a meeting we felt others regarded our exit with an attitude that we' had our priorities mixed. This year we‘ll wager‘ that meetings will be called after a perusal of the Panther Hockey schedule) If the K . , TALK defencanen stay healthy we'll be o.k. but, with such meagre numbers, an absence will result in our having Very busy goalkeepers. Too bad Mike Ready has outlasted his eligibility (he WASTED a couple of years with St. mr's) and he'll now have to try to pass on his skill and great team spirit as an assistant coach to Jack Hynes. Basketball practices start soon and Coach Hilton is close mouthed although optimistic. Last year's coach, Dave Nutbrown relimuished his position for seemingly greener pastures at Acadia andEd takes on double duties as BB,B, Coach and Athletic Director. Some years age our Football Coach departed under identical circumstances and Ed had. to jump in to fill the gap. That year we had the best team and record (we ever had (ask Mike Read) and Ed was ' named "Canadian Coach of the Year!!" Could we for a repeat? On the subject of Dave Nutbrown et al we do not think there should be any adverse criticism of him for his move. He moves on the what is pro- ' bably the best job in Canadian Intercolligateranks and if some of his players wished - to follow him,,,so what? We think we should thank him and them for a most entertaining season and wish them well ' except when theyplay the Panthers. 7 ' ' 00.,
