The factis that if public expenditures are made to promote private interests only, they are to be conde:nned as this private subsidy of the charterers of the tramp at Carriers is ! WEEKS & CO. THE PEOPLE’S STORE. WHOLESALE AND RETAIL. ves‘els in the oat trade with Great Brit ain—established sixty or seventy yearsago — must of necessity be driven out of the trade, because they eould not compete against the subsidized men. Indeed the unjustifiable character: of the tracsaction has been tacitly admitted by the eecrecy with which i‘ was conduct~ ed. Only one of the two eteamers was advertised as open for freight deliyered by the public; and the public generally were never given the faiptest susp‘cion of an idea that either of them had been subsidized by the Ottawa government. The private subsidy business was kept “‘quiet”—very quiet. This private subsidy business is the more to be deprecated because it is calcu. lated tod'scount our claims fora legitimate subsidy to a line of suitable steamers | provided with cold storage plying between this Province and Great Britaia for the purpose of establishing new trade in perishable products as well as in grain and cattle. The need of such a line is feit to the loss of our farmers and shippers whose cheese product must now be forwarded to the Mother Country by way of Halifax and Montreal. Cherse suffers depreciation by reason of handling in the sun, and the loss falls directly upon the farmers of this Province. Besides cheese, there are immenee possibilities in poultry, mea‘,live stock and other products which would be produced here in abun- dance, under favorable cenditious, to the great profitof the people of the Province, if only we had a regular line of subsidized steamers sailing direct from this port for the purpose of establishing the trade. We note that the Dominion Government ex- pends about $600,00@ a year in the sub- vention of steamships sailing from Cana- dian ports ; of which large amount Prince Edward Island gets the direct benefit of only $10,000, paid tothe Charlottetown Steam Navigation Company for the carri age of our maile,—only about two thirds ofour share. By giving additional subsi- dies to tramp steamers carrying oats, the Government has distinctly lessened our chances of success in ob‘aining the sub- sidy which is realiy needed in the pubtic interests, - ———— “We are on the eve of 4 momentous | nolitical election in which the entire Dominion must take part. At such a time the organ of the Conservative party in Prince Edward ‘Island fiods it fitting to ridicule a night telegraph service as quite beyond our needs,” There is notone word of truth ia this | last. statement of The Guardian. We have merely said in effect that redaced telegraph rates were more needed (han a nigbt eervice and that a night service under existing conditions would iaure chicfiy to the advantage of The Guardian. if Sir Louis bed secured a reduction of rates, we should have applauded him, if he had obtained a night service for The Guardian we should have said nothing, provided the cost to the public were nox excessive. But be has done neither; and girangely enough, The Guardian rails at aod groeely misrepresents THe Examiner’, eriticiems on thet account. The Guardian, having been disappointed by Sir Louie, might be expected te censure him for his wach talkingand nOn-successful action— a- THe Examines end al) independent men ave doing. If it were not hidebound in t: adberence to *the party in office it wuald do so. It is because we know that ‘bis community really needs a re- duction of telegraph rates that we find tault with Sir Louis for not using to that end the abundent means at his disposal. — Our esteemed and enterprising con temporary, L’Impartial, publishes thie week tbe portraits of Senator Pourier, President of the Natie af Convention :o be held at Aricbat, Judge Lanar , ot New Brunswick W.
