Yours, ete., mequirec. T'o ti, ent, a ENQUIRER. March 16, 1880, 7 oe & No Parade. } To the Editor of the Keaminer. Sir,—In yesterday's issue of your paper ap- peared a communication over the signature of *‘Justice,’’ in which the composition of my letter of Saturday last was criticised, and the a t ~ —— a) | | \ } ea fe | MOUSE facts contradicted. If J cannot call ‘‘Justice” a scholar, I can cail him a gentleman. tte | has treated me and the subject upen which 1} wrote in a thorough gentlemanly manner. Of course he alludes at the close of his commu- nicalien to the appointment of a ‘* Dictator” or ** Adviser’ who would continually watch over my countrymen, and give them the benefit of superior wisdom and thoughtfulness. This is not malice or centempt, itis the playful humor of a mind in which no evil thought could live. A bow and a smile accompany every word, and it is impossible to be angry. Having not heard the resolutions passed by the Irish Societies, 1 am uuable to give the exact words, but the spirit and purport are that they shall parade asusual. ‘‘ That they shall parade as usual” is a portion of the words used in the resolution of one of the Societies. In this sense, 1 think, the words ‘‘parade «as usual” are equivalent to ‘‘triumphal procession | through our streets.” Thus. do IL state a fact. Cold and unpatrotic is the heart of the irishman who needs a ‘‘celebration” on St. Patrick's Day ** to keep alive his love for Ire- land.’ The love that needs the stimulas of a celebration to keep it alive, sheuld, itself, sink into the mire ef forget/ulness. In lands where St. Patrick’s day is kept with neither parade, nor banners nor sash, the Irishman forgets not his country. The Shamrock, the emblem of dear, dear Erin, he places on his manly breast, and, as the pulsations of his warm heart shake the leaves of that plant that represents the friene’ God, he utters a prayer for his brethren beyond the sea, aud hopes that one day his bones will rest in Irish soil by Irish waters, beneath an Irish sky. This prayer will be on lips, and this sentiment in the heart of many an frishman on St. Patrick’s Day when, with tear stained cheek, he thinks of the old cabin in which he was born, and, in which, perhaps, his fond old meother died. Justice” says my allusions to “silent lens,” the ‘‘ Harp with the broken string,” ** Hills of Erin,” etc., ‘*may all sound well, but are quite common.” I wish to use common phrases, common clanses, and common words. These are none the worse for being common. My great difficulty in writing is to avoid the using ef uncommon expressions. Perhaps ‘‘Justice” is one of those writers who refuse to use the same words twice in a whole essay. How unlike the correct writers of our rich end energetic English! And must the writings of Byron and Newman be condemned because the *‘Sad Sweet Singer” and the great Theolegian sang and wrote in a style that even undeveloped minds can readily under- stand. Ah, ‘“Suastice,” your reasoning is faulty, and I fear your knowledge of language, like your knowledge of Irish patriotism, is superticial. Now, ‘‘Justice,” I must say fare- well. I will, on this subject, write no more, | presume that you will not reply, for to-mor- row’s sun will rise on St. Patrick's Day. Lhope it will not rise onan Irish processions. Then, in the after time, it will not be said that in the famine year, when Ireland cried to the Nations and te God for bread, her children paraded the streets green in and gold and mourned not with her. IRISBMAN, March 16, 188@. ~+$ > e——- ——— St. Patrick’s Day Parade. To the Editor of the Hxaminer. Dear Sir,—I am again compelled to ask a small space in your valuable paper. A three-star correspondent in yesterday's issue, but whom I believe to be ‘‘Irishman ” in dis- guise, meanly asserts that the Irishmen of this city who intead parading on St. Patrick's Day are not generous or true hearted. No fair-minded man would make such an asser- tion. If we are to judge from what Irishmen here have so far done, we would come to the conclusion that they are as true as ever to the ‘‘dear old land,” and feel as keenly for her distress. Parading on St. Patrick’s Day will make them none the less good [rishmen —will not be ‘‘cold,” ‘‘ungenerous” or ‘ cruel” to their ‘‘suffering brethren at home.” Irishmen ! if you have voted to parade, by all means do so, and do not be dictated to or in- fluenced by one or two anonymous newspaper scribblers.
