Had afew individuals undertaken the steam vessel, it would probably have paid an adequate return; but then the most important part of the whole enterprize would have been incomplete. The general interest in the affair would then be small—the energies of the people would not be with it. But let all aid in the project; let all have it at heart; let the farmer, and the merchant, and the mechanic, alike contribute their aid, and they will not stop at so small an end as a successful Steam Company. That will be but the stepping stone to a long course of public improvements, which shall at length raise Prince Edward Island to that importance which its natural advantages ‘so pre-eminently entitle it to. ' ‘ I am, your obedient Servant, VAPOR. Charlottetown, Dec. 17, 1841. To THE EDITOR or THE COLONIAL HERALD. Sun—In your paper ofSatui-day last, I noticed a letter from the Committee appointed at a Public Meeting, for the formation ofa Steam Company in this Island, showing what has been done towards its ucconiplislimnt, and setting forth the great advantages this Island would derive, by placing a steamer on the contemplated line. The gentlemen compo— sing that Committee propose to raise a capital of£9000, and state that £7000, Halifax currency, would be actually required to put a Boat of eighty horse power on the line. Now, Sir, I am decidedly of opinion, that under the present depressed state of things in England, an eflicient Boat, for less than two thirds the above'sum, might be purchased. It appears there is no probability of the people of New Brunswick or Nova Scotia taking the number ofshares re— served for them; yet, Sir, shall the scheme die a natural death on that account? ls there not a sufficient number of persons who will come forward and fill up the share list without their aid? I hope and trust there is, and that on the opening of the navigation, we shall see a fine steamer at the Queen’s Wharf; owned altogether within our- selves. . I believe there are one hundred and three shares already taken, and the sum of£1200 was granted by the House of Assembly last Session. Now, Sir, I call this a good begin- ning, and 1 do sincerely hope it will not end in smoke, after all that has been done, but that we shall raise the steatn yet. 1 have read with delight the replies to the various congra- tulatory addresses which have been presented to our worthy Governor, Sir Henry Vere Huntley, on his arrival amongst us, expressive as they are ofthe deep interest His Excel- lency heels in the prosperity of this fine Island, and ot'which His Excellency has already given practical demonstration, by his recent visits to several establishments in the town. I allude particularly to Mr. George Cole’s Steam Mill and Brewery, Mr. \Vatson Duchcmin’s ingenious machinery for Block—making, and Mr. John Jury’s Hoppery—witli all of which, I understand, His Excellency expressed himself highly pleased. Now, Sir, it is surely not presuming too much to suppose that his Excellency feels equally interested in that which, in theory at least, is admitted by almost every one who has given the subject any consideration as being of vital importance to the Island generally, viz: the establish- ment of the steam communication referred to. Would not the Patronage of His Excellency tend greatly to forward so desirable an object? I think no person would question it. I would, therefore, beg leave to su gest to the Committee of the proposed Company, that His Excellency should be wait- ed upon by them, and the whole of the scheme, with the proceedings thereon, submitted to His Excellency’s conside— ration; and, if approved of—which I cannot doubt will be the case—that His Excellency be invited to become its Patron, and to preside at a general meeting ofthe public, to be. called for the purpose of bringing the scheme to ma— turity, by filling up the subscription lit for the requisite number of shares. Trusting the suggestion will not be lost sight of, 1 remain, Sir, - Your obedient servant, , A SUBSCRIBER. Charlottetown, December 16th, 1841.
