What is leaking out in frspiientury form from Ottawa. ln regard to the census ,gives color to the impression that the total population may be found to bc dissapointlng. The population of Ottawa is stated to be 57,778, showing a gain of 13, i6‘.ll since l8§l. From this it would appear t that the capital has made 5 wholesome ‘lrrowth during the decade, although it fills considerably short of the 41 per cent of gain between 1881 and 1891. It had been hoped that Ottawa had now above 60,C00people. The fullest outline that we have yet :een oi the general result is that printed in Le Journslol Montreal in its Ottawa des- patch. This may be received with a measure ot caution, however. until the ollicial figures are made known, as the Journal being an Opposition paper, can hardly have exclusive sources of information. According to its statement 80counties in Quebec show a. decreased population, while both Ontario and the llaritlme Provinces have not kept pace even with Quebec, Ontario probably standing to lose three members and the Maritime Provinces one in consequence. The Jonrn:.l's statement makes Quebeo`5 present population about 1,800,000 against l.4=88,435 ten years ago, a gain of over 300,000. A considerable part of this gain would be in Montreal and other cities and the balance in the 45 counties which are said to chow an increase. The gain lattribuled to Quebec would not be in ,itself remarkable, but the slower szrowth :credited to Ontsnio must csuse surprise ii it should be verified by cillclal state- ments hereafter. i The esteemed Patriot has now discov- Eered that Premier Parquliarson, when ‘passing ihrouuh Winnipeg wasintervlew- jed by the Free Press of that city on the lsubiect, of prohibition. It has also learned that the Premier is now on his way home, but spparantly did not receive that in- formation in time to correct the opening sentence of its leading article, which 1' implies the contrary. Amember of Hon. Mr. l?srqarson's finally informs Tan Gusnnxcn that during his absence letters have been regularly received at intervals of two days. 'l'he Inst-lctser, received on Monday night Wal dated at Vancouver, 7|:-b instant. He was then in his usual ho:i.lLh. The Ottawa Citizen and Montreal Star of the 13th include the names ot Mr. and Mrs. Purquharsofi among the “recent arrivals" at Banfl' Hotel. The Patriot says a. tcleirrfun was received in the city yesterday from Mr. Farqnharson dated at Fort William and stating that he and Mrs. i~`flrquh.~rrson would spend the day there and will probably reach homo next week. The British Admiralty has done a great workinthcpast and is still carrying forward marine surveys in the interest of commerce and oi all who sail the seas. Just now-from the middle of May.pa.st and on to the ond of August-one ot His Majesty's ships has been and will be engaged in observ- ing the direction and speed of currents on the coast of France and near the Channel Islands. This harmless incident has aroused the fury ot some Paris newspaper men who see in it a menace to France. Rochefora and Laurent are angry and virulent. M. De Cassagnac, in Autorite in milder language says: “In such fashion, an outbreak of war is day by daymore probable, and there wiiluotbea corner of our coastlines which is not known, or shore that has not been inspected. It is an unheard of thing that our secular enemy, our eternal enemy, the one that hates us most, and thesis ever haunted by the thought of destroying us, should receive from the French Government the mission to cc- complish a task which long ago should have been completed only under the special direction of the navy of the republic.” ¢_ 1.. f i .$1.442 ....:"1‘a“m yetmadcapoct~mortcmca- ¥ aminationinacaseoi death c ` W' . ` > werectthmt.” =_ medicine which was int Dll the market, most success- zilx for Hear_trDisea.se and ~ Kidney - bbs, and most widely iglznted in D0tld’s Kidney? 1 . v. - " I I li: Pys to Buy at Perkins l ornctis of l l l 1 *___ Lcasc Wearing Mourning After July 24th Ql- A IRIGHTFUL CYCLUNE fbevastates Prince William ; Smashing Houses into Kincilmg Wood. _.mm w WHEN OFFICIAL MOURXING EYDI. ~ Orrswa, July 16.- Speolsl).-Order: l have been received irom the King that ' militia: oflloers cease wearing mourning on July 24th, but as civilians they will con- tinue to wear halt mourning, crcpe on arm at any social function.
