Sir, I have the honor to transmit to you the enclosed copy of a statement made by the master ofa ship " Norwood,” of Newport, relative to the services rendered to himself, and the crew of that vessel, by the ship 9‘ L. C. Owen,” of Prince Edward Island. In forwarding to me this statement, the Lords of the Committee of Privy Council for Trade inform me. that they have awarded a Sextant to Captain Angus Brown, of the “ L. C. Owen,” in acknowledgement of his hu— manity to British Seamen in distress. and I have much pleasure in forwarding to you their Sextant for pre- sentation to Captain Browzi, in such manner as you may think fit. I may add that the Board of Trade have paid a sum of £79 16s. 0d., to reimburse the owners of the “ L. 0. Owen” for the losses they sustained in subsisting the res- cued crew 'on board their vessel, and in payment to them of the value of a quantity of barley which had to be thrown overboard in order to make room for the res- cued persons. I hereby certify that myself”, 23“'seamen, and‘one cabin passenger, 25 in all, were picked up from the ship “ Norweod,” at sea, water logged. \Ve were picked up by the ship “L. C. Owen,” captain Angus Brown, on the 25th November, 1867, at which time it was blowing a very heaVy gale of wind, and a very high sea. The “ L. C. Owen ” was hove to 30 hours waiting an oppor- tunity to take us from the wreck; captain A. Brown ran great risk of losing his Boat, and Boat’s crew, but suc- ceeded in rescuing all hands without loss of life, but got his Boat slightly. damaged. and lost six oars. . November 27th : We fell in with the barque “Rosma,” of Pool, bound to Fowey, and the “L. C. Owen,” not having sufficient provisions and water on board for so many people, eight of the “ Norwood’s ” men were put on board the said barque. November 30th : We fell in with the barque “Agnes,” of Maitland. bound for London. and owing to our.pro- Visions and water getting scarce, and contrary Winds, seven more of the " Norwood’s ” men were put on board the “ L. C. Owen,” bound for Havre, where we arrived on the 12th ofDecember.1867. The “L.C.Owen” was put in quarantine till the 16th, when she was cleared. We then went on shore to the Consul. [Signed] “RD. Vessels entering the harbor should, in passing Pan- mure Island light, keep the above light on the bearing of N.
