The Cadre + 31 March 1998 Berzerkers Win Intramural Title!!! BY BILLY McQUEEN Billy McQueen has exercised his right to print what he really wished happened in lieu of the truth. The Berzerkers, in their first year as a franchise in the intercontinental intramural B basketball league, came out on top in the playoffs. The final score was (145-144) after three overtimes against the “Darkhorse” AVC squad. The Berzerkers' dream of intramural glory was realized during their playoff victory against “The Ratboys.” With only four players (Billy McQueen, Matt McQuaid, Brian Cameron, and John Brady) the Berzerkers made short work of the Ratboys. Matt McQuaid was overheard after the game to say, “go back to the cage and hit the exercise wheel.” The final game build up was similar to that of the NCAA final four. The UPEI gym was packed, and unfortunately some fans were turned away due to capacity restrictions. The Berzerker fans wore black and waved mini swords and shields while the AVC fans wore pink and turquoise and dressed up like barnyard animals. The game started with a blitz of three point attempts by Ryan Dickieson. After completing seven three point shots in a row, the all star refs (Greg Lucas and Billy Keaveny) warned Dickieson that if he shot one more three pointer, he would be kicked out of the game (see intramural rule book for three point violations). Dickieson ignored the warning and hit another three. The refs told him that he was kicked out of the game, but Dickieson refused to leave. The Campus Police, on patrol that game, promptly arrested him and threw him in “the cooler.” The game continued back and forth, with neither team exceeding a two point lead. When the final seconds of the game started to tick away, the AVC was down by two (80- 78) and decided to take a time out. The Berzerkers defence was exceptional, but then from out of nowhere, Joe Sullivan went baseline on Matt McQuaid and tomahawk dunked it in his face. The reaction from the crowd was tremendous--the barnyard noises of the AVC fans were deafening. The first overtime was dominated by Brian “thunder ankles” Cameron and David Hickey. The pair connected for more than twenty five points. Krista Foreman was also a wrecking crew under the boards, picking up thirteen points from rebounds. Again, towards the end of the first overtime, the scores were close. This time, however, the Berzerkers were down by two points (115-113)and from a back screen Neb (aka “The Croatian Sensation) knocked down one of his patented jumpers. : Frank (aka Big Money) of the AVC team proved his prowess at the end of the second overtime when he knocked down a three pointer. The third and final overtime proved to be exhausting for the Berzerkers. After breaking the full court press for most of the game, the players were visibly tired. ‘ John Brady of the Berzerkers called a timeout and said to the boys, “Let’s just slow itdown, okay?” On the next play, Brady dunked the ball so hard he ripped the rim right off. repaired the Berzerkers became recharged and were only down by one point in the dying seconds. The Berzerkers made a steal and Billy McQueen was fouled. McQueen dropped the two shots with ease to win the game for the Berzerkers. McQueen had been unstoppable from the line that night; after seventeen times at the line he had made all of his free throws. Matt McQuaid, the game’s MVP with a triple double (35 points, 15 rebounds, 10 assists) commented, “Yeah, I had a bit of an off game, but I’m glad we won.” Brent Byrnes, all-star of the b-league commented, “The Berzerkers have been hot all year they beat us by 45 a while back... they deserve the win.” PRESENT YOUR STUDENT ID FOR PICK-UP ORDERS! 310;39: 30 307 University Ave This Special Available For Delivery To: UPEI, BROWN COURT, HOLLAND COLLEGE & COMPU COLLEGE ONLY!!!
