survey carried out on 25 dairy farms in each ot' six
different counties in the province of Quebec. The
bulletin is intended to show the loss sustained by
farmers in not using pure bred cattle. We quote,
“From actual returns received by farmers it is
found that those who had pur-bred and high grade
cows and used a pure-bred sire received an average
return of $101, per cow. Those who had grade cows
but used a pure-bred sire received an average re-
turn of $89 per cow, while those with common cows
using a scrub or grade sire received a return of $72
per cow.”
It will be seen that although the differences be-
tween the various classes are striking, the general
‘average is low, even for the pure-bred cows.
- In a recent issue we published a report of the re-
turns receivefl by a Prince Edward Island farmer
from a herd of mixed grades and scrubs which aver-
aged $127 per cow in cash besides each cow rearing
her own calf, cows and calves bein-g fed exclusively
from the products of the farm to which they belong-
ed- We have no doubt that many other Prince Ed-
Ward Island herds, pure-bred, grades or scrubs, if
reported would make a better showing than the,
Quebec herds referred to.
