'That through- out Canada, as a whole, a period of expansion is opening up _cannot be questioned for a moment. That the government is placing itself and the country in line with the growing time and making ample provision for growth is clearly evident. for growth was made almost exclu- sively for the west and the west re- sponded with such phenomenal the world. It would appear that wherever an effort is made, wherever a blow is struck for development in Canada the response is quick and generous. I-ieretofore much of the provision growth as to attract the attention OV department especially, expanded until the wilderness prairie is dotted with cities and magnificent farming sec- tions. \ And now the East, the old East, with its established and in some cases nlmost decadent enterprises, is coming into its own. Adequate ap- propriations are being made for de- velopment and it,_is not too much to expect that the response will be even more pronounced than in the new and wilderness west. We have harbors open the year round, we have umlim- (ted resources 'in coal, iron, oil, lum- ber, agriculture, fisheries, resources tried and proved and on a. solid foundation. Development is all that is needed and the appropriations made this week for this development cannot but inaugurate a period of growth such as neither the east nor the west has yet seen. What does all this mean to Prince Edward Island? By means of the car ferry, now building, we are becom- ing part of the East. Hcretofore we stood alone, an island in the midst of a sea inaccessible for three and four months continuously, s, detached\ and unrecognized hit of the fringe of the dominion. Now we are to be on the map, on the main line of the transcontinental railway, with direstf unbroken-car-connection with every point from the Atlantic to the Paci- llc. What should it mean for us? Prince Edward Island, in its new connection, is not an experiment. With absolutely nothing but its‘own atural resources, with practically little assistance from its parent gov- ernment, with the same petitions for its legitimate rights repeated in vain year after year since we entered con- federation, the province, notwith- standing these disadvantages, has be- come the wealthiest, per capita, in the dominion. What can it not do under the changed conditions? We care not what the political name of the party is that has recog- nized the long neglected rights of the province. The thing is that these rights are being recognised and ad- justed and that under the new order ot things there is hops for greater forward strides than we have yet known. - Agricultnrslly our province has hitherto been only scratched on the, IV ALI. possibilities of an acre of its soil -but we are learning that these possi- bilities sre almost infinite. This, lor all time to come, will he an unfnillng source of wealth. The appropria- tions for the extension of agriculture are sufficiently generous to make in- calculable development along this line. Our nshcries which have been neglected and even depleted are being restored and they too will develop under the improved conditions be- cause they are the sneer ni their kin* in the world. There remains than for this province only to place itself in shape for the coming change, for the change is in- evitable. The impetus that is being artificially given to the develoPlI\¢!\ff of our natural resources cannot fail to bring about an ers of PYOBDGYUY su¢h gg we have not known in the past. __ NOTES. It will he noted by the incom- plete summary in our d¢BP0l1°\\°S 0* the 8rd, that Prince Edward Island has been generously treated in the estimates. The amount appropriat- ed for the year's work will set the ball rolling healthily and there is more to follow. The appropriation for the standardizing of the railway and for the car ferry terminus is merely preliminary and as a starter. It is sufficiently large to justify all the hopes of those who have been an- ticipating a boom in the province and it requires little optimism to foresee a period of expansion and growth in the immediate future such as the province has never before ex- perienced. This is Prince Edward Is- land's growing time and it behooves every man in it to place himself in shape for what is coming. This is the time to sink all party distinc- tions and rivalries and to pull to- gether. 'Phe prbvince is bigg'ei-‘than any party and the party in charge is showing itself equal to the job. ::The Thermos bottle is just the thing for taking lunch to the otlice, for school children and for holding all things that require to be kept at a uniform temperature.
