McCarthy, of Morell, at the Charlottetown Hospital on the 4th inst., brought to the hearts of all who knew her feelings of deepest sorrow and well merited sympathy for her be- reaved family. Mrs. McCarthy, not feel- ing altogether as well as usnal, decided to go to the hospital on November 6th, where she maintained ausually good state of health until shortly before her death, when she was scized by a severe attack of hemorrhagof the Jungs, and died within a couple of hours. Her remains were taken by train to Morel! station on Mon day evening, the 6th inst., where a_ large number of mourning friends awaited their arrival and followed in solemn procession to her home. On Wednesday her re- mains, followed by a large concourse of mourning friends and relatives, were con- veyed to St. Joseph’s Church, where a tequiem High Mass was sung by Rey. A. McAulay. The ceremony was grand and impressive. At the conclusion, the cortege reformed and proceeded to the cemetery, where the last sad rites were performed. The deceased was 33 years of age, and leaves a husband, two children and a large circle of friends to mourn the loss of a virtuous and affectionate wife, a kind mother and a charitable friend. Unprincipled persons are trying to prey upon and dupe people who are led to ask for kidney treatment. Some of the methods adopted by imitat- ors are as follows: First—To imitate the size, shape of Dodd’s Kidney Pills them by count. Second—To put them up to appear very nearly the same and to be offered at same price. Third—To hook on the word “kidney” in naming cathortic pills so as to increase sales of mere physic. Fourth—To givea name so near Dodd’s that unwary people may be deceiv- ed and think they are getting Dodd’s. Look out for such dodges. When you want kidney medicine you want the best. It is Impossible to Take This Fanciful Pro duction Seriously, It is hardly possible to take ‘*Ths Woman's Lible’’ seriously, so much of it is flippant and ridiculous; and yet it has a sober and significant aspect. The names ot the women who prepared it, as far as it given to the public, are well! known and highly respected. They repre- sent in a distinct and practical sense the cause of the emancipation of their sex, as they call it, and nobody is disposed to question their sincerity. But it may be well doubted if their attempt to discredit the Scriptures in the interest of the mothers and daug@ers of the world will prove to by successfal. On the contrary, it is likely to retard progress of the mcvement to enlarge the sphere of woman and abolish the discriminations which are o be unjust and injurious to her. These bold and eager critics of the great- est of all books do not speak by any auth- ority of superior ability in that relation, ani certainly they do not present anything that is either novel or impressive. For the most part, they merely repeat the time-worn sophistries and special plead- ings of infidel writers in ail ages; and the prevailing spirit of the work is supercil- ivus and irreverent. It is comparatively easy, us all students of the Bible Enow, to point out technical discrepancies in it. Col. Ingersoll has made that sort of flaw- picking familiarand more or less popular; but the efforts of these feminine scoffers to imitate him are sadly bungling and inefiective The fact is worth noting by way of il- lustrating the general character of the book that, while it contemptuously rejects the story of the creation of woman out of a rib taken from Adam while he slept, the story of the serpent and the temptation of Kve is practically acceptel. Adam’s con duct in the case is severely and justifiably condemned, and we are told that “‘the un prejudiced reader must be impressed with the courage, the dignity and the lofty ambition of the woman.’*’ Thus thetouch of vanity that makes the whole sex kin serves to authenticate one miracle and to invalidate another in pretty contempt of the fact that they both have the same foundation and are equally credible. The story of the birth of Moses is accepted be- cause it appeals to maternal instinct, and because only women were present when the baby was discovered among the bul- rushes By asimiiar process of distine tion the stor7z of Balaam and the ass is in- dorsed, because the ass was of the fen ‘nine While Balaam was angry, head- strony and violent, we are informed, the ass calmly manifested ‘the keen spiritual and the ready power of speech with which the female sex has been spe- cially endowed, and which are often re- ferred to with ridicule and reproach by stolid, envious observers of the less im- pressionable sex.’’ The e specimens jndi- cate the drift of the work as a whol@~nd the theory upon which it is based, if it can be said to have a theory. There is nothing to be said in favor of such a book as a contribution to the liter- ature of the woman question. It will pro voke derisicn on the one hand, and on the other a feeling of profound pity and re- gret. The sentiment to which the cause of feminine advancement owes all of its triumphs and to which it must look fora!l of its future victories +i] not be inercased by a performar this sort When the champions of the rights of the sex make their cause absurd they can not has been the nileced ‘,< LTS girs l suréty e ce of expect it to prosper, And that is the be- setting weakness of their methods and policies. Itis difficult to conceive of a wors? mistake that that of making assaults upon the y they could make than antagonizing Christianity and Bible that is the source: of ali that ood and true in our civilization. Women are most respected and honored on account of their mcral and religious qualities. Men willingly accord to them a superiority in that respect, and pay them homage because of their devo- tion to spiritual interests. If they throw away that advantage and become skeptics and cynics as to matters of vital import- ance, their privileges and opportunities will not be extended. The infidel woman is a kind of contradiction of nature, an «- ject of astonis and aversion; and if the sex is wise it ill never adopt that eondit'on for the purpose of promoting its chances of we'fare and happiness, She Blanicd the Fountain Pen, ‘* Annabel, called a rich shoeman’s wife over the banister, as she heard the front door close. ‘*Yes, mamwma,’’roplied a sweet, girlish voice, and Annabe! Garta slowly framed herself in the darkness of the staircase. ‘“*Was that Mr. Toptif, Annabel?” “It was, mamma,’’ “Do you know it is twenty minutes after eleven?’’ came in cold tones from the wrappered figure in the upper hall. “Mamma, we hadn’t the slightest idea it was so late,’’ said the young lady ear- nestly. * You see.’’ she continued, Mr, Toplif has been telling me about China and Japan, He said everybody ought to know about the war, and it was so interesting we never thought how late it was getting.
