Emmett Gilson and Lottie Score a Decided Success. | Halifax Recorder Manager Clarke has brought some well- | known stars to Halifax during his career as theatrical manager, and last night gave our cllJZepDs an opportunity i seeing two euch noted artists as-', kK, Emettand Lottie Gilson, who opened their season at the Academy of Musician “Fritz in a Mad House,” toavery large audience, who thoroughly enjoyed the piece and the work of the company, and laughed until their sides ached with many of their amusing scenes. Fritzin a Mad House might termed a comedy-drama, and at times is a farce comedy. There is an interesting plot of the father devoted to the daughter, who though not in society, and the mother who believes only in her son, whois abroad among the best people, but turns out that the daughter is the best after all. There are several pathetic scenes, but the piece for the most part is highly amusing, and is intended principally to introduce Mr. Emmett in hie character of Fritz Mr. Emmett’s father made thousands in the character, which was introduced in a series of plays—Fritz in Ireland, Fritz ta Prosperity, etc. Frits in a Mad House was his last play and was taken up byhis son, who sings the principal songs which made such a success for his late parent, includ- ing the Cuckoo Song, the Lullaby, Sc hmer- der how you was, etc. Mr. Emmett follows closely in his father’s footsteps, and gives a splendid conception of the role, and hie dancing is a great feature. The late Mr. Emmett, however, never had such an artist with him as Miss Lottie Gileon ; she is known as one of the most popular serio-comic vocalists on the vaude~ ville stage in America or Europe, and bas been such a favorite in New York that she bas appeared at some theatres there for several months, and has been the highest salaried artiste before the public in her line. It was the first time a Halifax audi- euce has hadthe pleasure of listening to her, and they received her with so much applause that she was compelled to ask not to demand so many encores ; she bas a way 2fsingingthat charmes everybody ; herecunciation is clear and distinct, and her expression and manner most magnetic. Among her songs were Jenny Jones, Military Mollie, the Iceman, Telephone, My Baby, and the Moth and the Flame. The supporting company was all that could be desired, notably J. A. Nunn as Uncle Joe, ‘who is one of the best actors we have ever seen here, and Miss Ida Lewis as Mrs. Parker. Boby Beatrice is one of the cutest children seen on the stage. There will be only two more _perfor- mances of this piece, and Afies Gilson will introduce pew songs nightly. It is one of the best attractions we have had, and should not be “missed by anybody who can laugh or can enjoy popular songs. Miss Lottie G:ison will sing the follow. ing Songs tonight: Military Molly, The Girl [ Loved in Sunny Tennessee, Jolly Jessie Jones, Mi Hanna Lady, Little Wil- lie. wel! be —_—_——— ape ee ESTEEMED EXCHANGES. Hamilton Herald: Some Canadian militiamen were in Rochester, N. Y , on the 4th of July, and the Rochester Herald refers to the friendly manner in which they mixed with “the deecendante of the men who conquered their empire.” As the empire is still doing business at the old stand, ‘the ancestors of the Rochester men must haue kindly given the empire back to its original owners, which was very nice of them, ‘ Pere — Before voting for the second reading of the Grand Truaok Bill, now before the Senate, Sir McKenzie Bowel! explained that if the amendments proposed or to be propose] were not such as to meet the very strong reasons adduced why the bil] ehould not be passed, he retained the right to vote for a three or six months’ hoist on the third reading. Orrawa, July 13.—Thbere is another side tt tory in reference to e | Laurier residence matter, which cropped in Parliament Just week, that has so far pot been made public. When Sir Wilfrid stated that he had been offered the house and refused it, he doubtiess, for reasons of nis own, did notstate all the facts. It appears that last year, when the question or procuring a residence tor the Premier at Ottawa was mooted, it was contemp'ated to make the present of the dwelling direct to Sir Wilfrid. Then some shrewd party man hit upon the device of procuring, not a permanent abode for Sir Wilfrid, but a manse for the Liberal leader for the time being, whoever he may happen to be. Mr. Dobel! was ehiefly instrumental in passing round the hatto get the requisite money to purchase a residence for Sir Wilfrid, aod met with good success, but when the plan was changed, and it was decided to simply make Sir Wilfrid a tenant so long as Le was leader, and that the house should be the property of the party, with Bate and Sons as trustees, many of the original subscribers would have nothing further to do with the affair. One prominent Liber- al, who bad promised Mr. Dobell a sub» stantial subscription at first, refused point blank to countenance the new scheme when it was prop%eed to him. A NEW BUTTER MACHINE woe ee Handles 125 Gallens of Milk and takes Butter Direct From it. A report to the Montreal Star states that there was recently exhibited at the Gov- ful dairy invehtion the work of Mr. E. G. N, Saleniaus, of Stockholm. The Radia- tor butter-maker, which is a combined separator and churn is in operation there taking the butter directly out of the milk at the rate cf 125 gallons of milk an hour. The process by which butter is produced directly from the milk in one continuous operation is explained at leenth and al! questions clea~ly and courteously answered by Mr. E. Oblen. There is alsoon ex- hibition a new butter press invented by Mr. Arthur Vaillaccount, af Montreal, which gives very general satisfaction. The opin- ions ¢xpressed regarding the Radiator are all more or less favorable, although it was admitted that a single trial is not sufficient to test the merits of such an invention. ko _—— a MEDICAL SCIENCE ADVANCES, 1 4 Positive Cure for Asthma Discovered It has long been recognized by medicad scientists throughout the world that nature has supplied all creation with some remedy in the vegetable or mineral kingdom where with al forms of ailments can be cured, but it was not until the discovery by Stan. ley of the wonderful Kola plant along the Congo River in Africa that asthma was permanently curable, In fact, it was not until the investigations made by Dr. Clarke some years inter that this disease was found curable ; he found that by combining the extract of Kola Nut with other vege- table extracts that the compound obtained would permanently cure astnma.
