Transportation Discussed At S’Side Meeting The regular mcnuiiy meeting of the Summer-side Board of Trade was held last night in the town hall. The newly elected president, Mr. Donald Baker, presided. Min- utes of the previous meeting were rend ona adopted. The secretary, Mr. Hinton read a report which had been rent to Mr. Sc anders of the Maritime Board oi Trade bv the town improvement committee. This report gave figures in connection with the increase in the population of the town of summerside. It was noted that as the time of the last census of 1941 the population was 5,000. Prom information gathered the population had increased by about 1000 or about 20 ' percent. This influx was due to increase in the capacity the Silmmerslde Air Training School. Business men reported larger sales during 1942 to civilian trade than ever before in all the town's history. CrOps were good and all farm pIiJdilCig brought high prices. Mr. sclanclers in his reply gave his assurance that the information would be passed along to the pro- per authorities with a view of ob- taining fuller quotas of merchand- for the coal merchants. The following business men of Summcrside were proposed as new members; Elmer Moore, Andrew Gardner. William Jenkins, Cecil Carver. Fred Murphy. John Cobb, "igliam Palmer, Ralph Williams, Horace McFarlane, it was moved and seconded that they be admitt- ed as members. The different committees for the incoming year were announced and were approved by the Board. The various mcmibers spoke briefly but highly of the excellent work of the retiring President Mr. AR. Bren- nan. The recent sac bereavement of Mr. and Mrs. Brennan was touch- ingly referred to by the Board and a committee was formed to draft a letter of condolence to Mr. an Mrs. Brennan in the loss of two of their sons in the service of their country. The matter of the carferry ser- vice engaged the attention of the Board to considerabIe length and the president Mr. Baker said he believed that "now was the time proper authorities for a suitable canferry." Different members sup- ported the idea of presing claims for a tunnel as an after the war project, but the e-IICEIIBIJS of opin- ion was that no time should be lost in providing adequate ‘“‘ for transportation am it was agreed that while the tunnel was the only with the least ssible delay. The Presiden announced that sit about fifty tons of coal in the hands of the retailers in Summ side. Impossibfitv empty cars to bring in coal was the main reason for this and while shippers were unable in one in- stance to get one si le oer for coal there were 150 emp cars at Bor- den which the present transport- at‘on facilities made it prohibitive to get to the mainland. The President pointed out the dire straits the Province would be should anything occur that would nut the present ferry. out of order for a week or ten davs. No definite decision in the matter of drafting a resolution regarding the proposed ferry was taken and th- meetiiw adjourned. sin rein.” i3}: f!
