SEAMAN., above, in the same } White LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. Grain That Does Not Rast. Sik,—The Island Farmer of the 12th hes a letter from Jas. D. Dewar, Es, , of Mon- tague, in which he gives an account of seine ‘*Demoerat’ wheat which he has grown, | and which he says was untouched by rust, tield and circumstances where Russian was badly rusted. He wishes to know the reason of this. ‘There have been several kinds of whe at | which, when first introduced here, hava; been noted for withstanding rust. The old | red Mediterranean was one of them, and 1 | see by the Reports that it is yet considered | rust-proof in some parts of the United | States. These varieties appear to be vigor- | ous growers, with thick cuticles. This) latter quality enables them to withstand | the rust parasite. from a badly rusted field, which themselves , had escaped uninjured, These stalks were | bright and clean; but with the microscope it could be seen that the. rust spores had fastened ou them and had germinated an- to burst their way through the strong cuticle to the air, and consequently could not develope. In fact, the vigorous grain stalk was strong enuiugh to amother its at- tacking parasite and prevent its growth. F. Barn. Our Horse List. RECORDS, AND BREEDING OF TIME PROVINCE TROTTERS, NAMES, MARI- (Halifax Recorder.) The list of maritime province trotters and pacers, with records, which we pub- lished last year for the first time in the his- tory of the turf in the provinces, met with sv much favor, that we have compiled another list, including those which reduced their records or made new records this season. Much time and labor have been spent in preparing the list, which has been made as correcta possible with the inior- mation at hand, but there may be a few wnaccuracies, and there also may be some omissions, but if any of our readers observe the same we will be juite pleased if they will give us any information, so that the list may be made as complete as possible. We have given the pedigree in every in- stance where known; and where the name of the sire is omitted, we would be pleased to have the omission supplied. The list of trotters and pacers, with re- cords owned in Nova Scotia, New Bruns- wick and Prince Edward Island (as far as known) is as follows : Adele Gould, ch m, by Jay Gould ...... 2.19 Lumps, b s, by George Wilkes ......... 2.21 Kate Taylor, b m, by Aberdeen ........ 2.23} Daisy Hartshorn, b m, by Aberdeen. ...2.244 Augusta Schuyler, ch m, by Aberdeen . .2.26 Rime, Ge 6, by St Mimo... ...s. 0 o0seer +h 2.274 Sir Wiilliam Wallace, b s, by the Robin- ten I og lk oh coe ckn + cieeensnaan 2.274 Edgardo (4), b s, by Rumor..........+. 2.284 Lyra, blk ini, by Anteor.:. -.........0ee- 2. 284 Guizea, mang Memertiie is as. ce cece 2.29 Alice Blackwood, ch m, by Blackwood . .2.294 Ray Gould, b m, by Jay Gould, 2.294 Administrator, bs, by Kysdyk’s Hamble- DURE 5 0s 00nd bpcunkwtcesacves ene 2.294 Black Pilot, bik s, by All Right........ 2.303 Col.
