Stolen Fuel Is Recovered ST.. JOHN’S, Nfld. (CP)—Pro- vincial fire commissioner Frank Ryan said Sunday night 450 gal- lons of contraband jet fuel sold illegally to city householders had been recovered. There may be more in circulation. “We don't know how wide- spread this thing is, or if it’s widespread at all,”’ he said. Earlier police announced the fuel was stolen from among 1,000 barrels stacked against a build- ing at United States air force in- stallations at nearby Torbay air- rt It was not known how many of the 45-gallon barrels were stolen. U.S. officials are checking stocks now and expect to know -today how many barrels are missing. The fuel was stored in a field after it was discarded as second grade. The stolen fuel, dangerous if used in stoves and heating units, was first discovered among householders on Thursday. Mr. Ryan immediately . alerted citi- zens to notify his department if they had purchased fuel recently from other than authorized deal- ers..
