By Dean MacMillan Hello Freshman. I am sorry I missed last weeks edition of the GEM. I fell slightly behind in my work. Tam all caught up now how- ever and will be with you here on out. Well, in about three weeks it will be all over and we won't be freshman any more. This is the time of year when we can put cur heads down and work hard because we know it will all be over soon and we will be off for the sum- mer. Hopefully you all have a line on a summer job. If not it still isn*t to late to )start searching. Remem- ber, if you need some help just contact Student Ser- They have the Em- ployment Center right in their midts. Here they can vices. help you look for a job as well as prepare you to en- The last student coun- cil took place on March 22. It was followed by an unsceduled meeting on the 29 of March. At the first meeting several new councillors were sworn in for their respective terms. We were also visited by the chief architect of the Main building renovations who gave us a short overview of the plans he has for main building. In turn coun- cillors asked questions and expreesed concerns about the plans. (note: if any one has any concerns about the plans for Main build- ing they should contact Prof. Koch of the philos- ophy dept. or speak to one of your councillors.) Also during the last meeting we were visited by Mr. James Griffith who is in charge of student ser- Seno souesdey, — 2 1987 ter the job market. They will help you with such things as constructing a resume and/or preparing you for the all important in- terview. If I could offer you with one piece of advice it would be “THINK POSITIVE”. I think this is all important. You must say to yourself “I can get this job, or I can do well in this inter- view.” This attitude has . tion. always worked wonders for me and I am sure it will work for you. Your poten- tial employer always seems to notice if you have a posi- tive frame of mind or not. So remember, think posi- tive and the best of luck to you. I am terrible when it comes to names and not much bet- ter when it comes to faces. I am trying to overcome this, please bear with me. In the meantime if I don’t speak, you speak to me. I STUDENT COUNCIL UPDATE vices. Mr. griffith told us of a new init- iative by the university in regards to aca- demic orientation at UPEI. He told us of many new programs designed to help incoming freshman. He also noted that if any fresh- man want to express their opinions he is all ears. I think it would be great if we freshman expressed our opinions to Jim in regards to this very important sub- ject. At the next council meeting on March 29, we discussed the role that ini- tiation plays in orientation. This turned in to a rather heated debate. .There was a motion to totally ban the initiation. was done in light of a degree of negative feedback from this some students about initi- ation. The motion however was defeated and initiation will remain for 1987. An- other motion calling for the polling of students in re- gards to this question was passed however and_ will take place this fall. People have spoken to me about noise in the library, poor courses, poor profs, events at the barn and so on. The most recent concerns from stu- dents have been about poor parking here at the school. It seems that students feel that often the parking here is inadaquate. Well I tend I have spoken to the student coun- to agree with this. cil and they agree with you.
