A French Lady, calling herself the Baroness de St. Estrapade, who lately appeared before the correctional tri- bural of the Seine on a charge of drunken and disorderly conduct, suc- ceeded in convincing the court that the weariog of a fur cloak was the cause of her eccentric behavior. Some time agro, she explained, she read ina jours | nal that the surest way of preserving furs from the ravages of moths was to} stow them away in an empty spirit cask | She aceordingly bought one, and to its) safe-keeping she contided her fur cloak. | On the morning of the day of hor| arrest, which was very cold, she put} on this garment, and, as she declared, | once eut of doors, the combined effect | ofthe cold and the alcoholic tames| emanating from the cloak made her giddy, and produced all the appearance of intoxication. The ** agent” who took her up deposed that “ she smelt of al- cohol at fifteen paces’; and her bonne deposed to the purchase of the cask and its employment as a wardrobe. The| judge remarked that if every lady | adopted this line of defence to the par-| tieular charge brought against the baroners, convicticn would be im- | possible. ———- History of Matches. The fiftieth anoiversary of the inven- | tion of matches by three Austrians was | recently celebrated. Fifty years ago! matches had only reached the stage | known as ** lucifers,” and were clumsy | und inconvenient. Fox asd Burke and | Dr. Johnson used to light their candles | With flint and steel, through practice | probably made them more skilful than | we would be atsuch an operation. In| 1825 an elaborate appartus called thes “eupyrion” was ia common use. | This wasa large mouthed bottle con-| taining sulphuric acid, soukedin fibrous | asbestus, and the matches, which were | about two inches long aad sold for a shilling a box, were tipped with a chemical combieation of which chlorate of potash was the principal ingrediant. When the ead of the mateh was dipped into the acid and rapidly withdrawn fire was prodoced. But the acid was inconvenient, the matches were likely to Le spoiled by damp, and the eup srion s00n Went out of use. In 1832 the first friction match was made, and it was jokingly called a lucifer. Lucifers were substantially the same as our present matches, pulled throngh a piece of sand-paper. ‘The only changes since then has been altering it from a silent (0 a Loisy match and the inven- tion of the safety fuse, which will ignite only when rubbed upon chemi- cally prepared paper. This safety match was patented in England in 1859. There is one match making firm in Manchester, England, that makes 6,000,000 matches a day, and several firms in London make 2,000,000 and 3,000,000 a dey eaeh. From the consumption of matches in France and Englend it is seen that about 250,000,- 000,000 are made in those two countries every year. In the United States about 40,000.000,000 a year are made, yielding a revenue to the Government ef about $3,500,000. The Great French Remedy, Ds. LeDuce’s Periodical Pills. Dr, LeDuc’s Pills are the oldest, most used, and most reliable remedy for the cure of Sup- presged Menstruation ard other Uterine diseases and wherever they have been introduced, have driven generally every other remedy out of the market, They were first introduced into Paris, France, by Dr. LeDuc in 1839, and have so gained the confidence of the pubiic that they have for years been the st anding remedy in every houce- hold, Al’ druggiets, Tye Srarx Kipxer Pav Co., Toronto, Ovt.
