Redevelopment Proposal Meets | Mixed Reaction TORONTO ‘(CP)—A. proposal for a $250,000,000 redevelopment project. on 20 acres that would change the face of downtown Toronto has met with mixed re- action The proposal, made by the T. Faton Cé. Ltd., included an of- fer to spend $8,000,000 on a new police headquarters building and a ‘new magistrate's courthouse for Toronto in return for the old city hall and land around it The «company expressed hope that the offer would pave the way for Canada’s largest urban redevelopment scheme to cover the area bounded by Yonge. Queen, Bay and Dundas streets. In_reply to protests that sale of the old city hall would mean destruction of a historic - land mark, FEaton’s also offered to retain the hall's clock tower and the cenotaph in front of it and to set aside more than 19,000 aquare feet of land for public use. : The purposed Eaton centre would. include office buildings, apartments, a hotel, stores, malls and arcades, a modern bus terminal, a huge new de- partment store and .a network of underground promenades de- @igned to separate pedestrians from vehicular traffic. The estimated cost of $250,- 0,000..compares with the $105,- 000,000 price tag on Montreal's Place Ville Marie.
