Supposing it to be true, his Grace will come “ on a wild goose chase, ’ Ee In England, recent investigations have resulted in the disclosure of ‘‘ corruption to an alarming extent” under the ballot sys- tem ; and it is said that measures will be taken for the abolition of the ballot in elec- tions. __—om «© Ir is supposed that the details of the Pacific Railway Contract were settled on Friday. If they were, we may expect soon to hear a definite announcement of the members of the Syndicate and the terms on which the contract is made. °° —_ - Tux prolonged spell of weather has at last been broken. The ‘ oldest inhabit- ant’ says he never saw a finer summer ; and a sea captain who called at the Exam- INBR office yesterday says that in his expe- rience of thirty-one years of ‘‘ life on the ocean wave,” he does not remember a year in which there were fewer storms. ur Dominion Governinent, some time ago, issued a proclamation appointing Wed- nesday, the 3rd day of November next, ‘‘a day of general thanksgiving t@#” Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed this year.” The Governments of the various Provinces, in- eluding that of this Island, have also pro_ claimed the 3rd day of November ‘‘Thanks- giving Day.” 1t is fitting that such unanimity has been shown. Ali parts of the Dominion have been greatly, blessed ; and it is good to have set apart one day on which the whole peeple may, as with one heart and mind, ‘‘ Praise God from whom all blessings flow.”’ 2 en ee oem Attempted Suicide. -A case of attempted suicide was report- ed from St: Peter’s Road, this forenoon. A servant girl in the employ of Mr. John Ferguson, was left alone in the house at- tendiay, to her duties when Mr. Ferguson and the farm bands went to work. She was apparently in cheerful spirits and was eccupied at washing the breakfast dishes when they left. Twenty minutes after their departure, one of the hands returned and found her almost lifeless body suspended by a rope toa beam in the workshop. He cut it down and then run to the field in which Mr. Ferguson was at work, and informed him of the occurrence. Mr. Ferguson re- turned to the house, and seeing symptoms of life in the body, came to the city for medical aid. But we learn he could not get any. One doctor informed Mr. Fergu- son, that if the girl was alive, she was ail right, and if she was dead he would be no help to her. The unfortunate girl’s namo is Small. Her parents reside a short distance from Mr. Ferguson’s residence. We learn that this Miss Small, last July, while labor- ing under a fit of insanity, wandered from Mr. Ferguson’s residence, and was found by the neighbors who turned out in full force to search for her, in the vicinity of Crosby’s Creek. She was completely ex- hausted when found, and totally uncon- scious of her wanderings. Since July she informed. her mother that she had been at one time seized with a similar fit, but it was not so bad as the first. Lt is likely that while laboring under a fit of mental depres sion, that she attempted to end her life. LATER. Dr. McLeod left fer the scene of the suicide this forenoon ; but the unfortunate girl expired before his arrival. _- Mr. Gattacuer, of Beaconsfield Vine yard, Point Clair, P. Q., is now on P. E. Island, whither he went witha large quan- tity of vines—some two thousand dollars’ wortii—which were ordered by a gentleman there after seeing the exhibit made at Mon- treal. Grapes are destined to be grown ex. tensively in Canada and some of our farm- ers might find it profitable to look into the, subject. — Moncton Times. The vines brought by Mr. Gallagher are te be planted on St. Dunstan’s College Farm for His Lordship Bishop Mclutyre. It is to be hoped that His Lordship’s enter- ise will be successful and that grapes will be profitably grown in this Province. MacKEREL.— More mackerel has been ship- ped this year from 5é. John than on any pre- vious year. During July, in which month the shipping season for this year commenced, there were sent away !,182 barrels via Inter- national line. In August, 2,967 barrels were sent, and in September, 4,025 barrels. To- day the City of Portiand carries away 500 barrels, making a total shipped thus far in October of 4,128 barrels, and a total for the seagon up to date of 12,302 barrels. Besides this, 400 barrels came in by the Intercolonial Railway yesterday morning, which the steamer will be unable to carry away, while 1,00) barrels more are lying at Point du Chene ready to be brought to St. John. The fish are of better quality than usual and have mostly been caught by Prince Edward Island dealers and by American fishermen, who catch and barrel them on their vessels and take this way of getting them to market in quick time, alewing them to continue their crue. T housands upon thousands of barrels sre piled up in the Beston warehouses await- ng ® rise in price. —St, John News, Mother The statement, is, of course, a Ze — ——— Local and Other fiems.
