The ap~ paratus employed was the so-called trawl-net, constructer on the same prin- cipal as that employed by the English fisherman on Doggerbank. Fish were taken up with that apparatus from depths of 1,400 and 1,500 fathoms. Five species proved to be entirely new to science, and it was necessary to classi- fy one of them under a new genus. This was caught at a depth of 1,200 fathoms, and was about one foot long. While alive it was beautifully rose- colored all over, but of so soft and ge- latinous a substance that it was half transparent, and the heart could be seen performing its functions; and large proportions of the brain, the entrails and the whole backbone were visible through the skin. The abdominal fins were transformed into two iong, split threads, which gave the fish 2 very pe~ culiar appearance. It was named Iho- dichtyes Regies and belongsto a group of venuine deep water fishes, which is chiefly limited to the tropical seas. The, genuine aretic genius yeodes, of which, up to the present time, only specimens have been found near Green- land and in other places near the Polar Sen (almost always taken by chance from the stomachs of sharks). appeared to exist in quantities everywhere at! these great depths, whers the temper- ature of the water is under zero. It has only been the lack of suitable apparatus which has until now prevented the discovery. A Midnight Vigil. ‘The night is dark, the air is raw and chill and damp, the storm is raging. An old and eminently respectable citizen, out ou North hill, is sleeping the sleep of the just with the snore of the wicked, and the private clocks,on their respective brackets and mantles throughout the city, for Bur- lington has no towa clock, are tolling, as well as they know how to toll it, the hour of 1.30 a. m. A violent jangling at his door bell}: awaices the eminently respectable citizen. Shuddering, he crawls out of bed ; muttering, he gropes across the floor. Swearing under his breath, he falls over a rocking chair. At last he finds a match, lights a match and descending the stairs opens the hall door, and admits a gust of wind that blows out the lamp and a torrent of rain that drenches him to the skin, ‘What is wanted ?’ the respectable citizen asks. ‘Are you the resident owner of this property ? promptly inquires the caller. ‘{ am,’ wonderingly replies the emi-— nently respectable citizen. ‘ Were you ia bed when I rang ?’ ‘| was,’ replied the eminently respect- able. ‘hat was right,’ cheerfully exclaims the caller ; ‘that is the place fora man of your age at this time of night. 1am surprised to see you out of it. Get back to it, and pleasant dreams—’ A\l is silence after the crash that en- sues, save amocking smile that dies away in the distance. The fragments of the lamp that are revealed on the side- walk by the coming of the dawn indicate, that cither the lamp fell out ot a balloon at the height of about twenty-nine miles or was hurled at some object with great force. When will the mystery be solved ? ——_-_ --<+<>-— —-—— The troubles and hardships of editors which furnish the subject for so many in- different newspaper humourisms in America are a grim reality in Russia. It is stated that not a single prominent writer of Rus- sia has had a tranquil life or has died of old age. The Russian writer is either a serf or amartyr. Siberia, the gallows or foreign exile, is the fate of those who dare to be henest, and the fate even of the servile and time seeking is little better from a financial point of view. ‘“ Ninety per cent of our Russian literary men,” says the Golos, ‘are poor, and daily struggle for their daily breal.” Add to this the various accidents that befall all literary work, wretched pay (by the line), and the restrictive and re- pressive regulations under which they do their work, and you have a true picture of the situation of the Russian journalist. a Boschees German Syrup ean now be purchased right at home, it is the most snecessful preparations ever introduced to our people. Constitutional © Catarrh Remedy CURES CATARRH. Hear what a Reverend Gentleman saya of the Constitutional Rew.edy. T. J. B. Hanprxa, Eeq., Brockville, Ont.:— Dear Sin—It is now two years since your ‘‘Censtitutional Catarrh Remedy’ was intro- duced tome. Ihave waited this ong to see if the cure would remain permanent before de- ing this, my duty, to you, as at first the happy effects seemed to me to be “too good to true.” I was afflicted in my head for years before I suspected it te be Catarrh. In reading in your Circular I saw my case described in many par ticulars. The inward ‘‘drop” from the head had become very disagreeable, and a choking sensation often preventing me from lying long, I would feel like smothering and be compelled to sit up in the bed. My health and spirits were seriously affected. When your agent came to Walkertown in August, 1876, I secured three bottles. Before I had used a quarter of the contents of one bottle I found decided re- lief, and when I had used two bottles and a third. I quit taking it, feeling quite cured of that ailment, and have not used any since until of late I have taken some for a cold in my head. A sense of duty to sufferers from that loath- some’ disease, Catarrh, prompts me to send you this Certificate, andelteith , with leave to make what use of it yon may see proper Yours truly, W. TINDALL, Methodist Minister. Port Elgin, Ont., Aug. 24, 1878. Ask for Littlefield’s Constitutional Catarrh Remedy and take no other. T. J. B. Hakprxe, Dominion Agent, Brock- ville, Ont.
