LlllELY MEETING Continued from page 1 of the bitterness occasionally not- iced.-atemmed from the desire of the people of Parkdale to obtain city water and their apparent fall- iire to get it. Some of the moat acrimonious debates of the even- ing centred around this subject. The CommLssloners present. Mr. MacLtiren was absent. told of the frequent attempts they had made to get some satisfaction from the City and the Provincial Govern- ment. Mr. Cook told the meeting the Government was fully aware of the problem. A large number of those present took part in the debate with one speaker emphasizing the danger of epidemics from local water becom- ing polluted. He stated that when an outbreak of disease (Newcastle) threatened the poultry industry on the Province the Government mov- ed quickly to take action, He won- dered why a possible epidemic om- ong people could not be stopped before it got started. ' - Several other speakers rclcijred to frcoucnt dilcoveriea of water going bad in the villages. 'rlte.v pointed out that in the early stat!!! of Parkdale'it development the pres- ence of wells and smile tanks did not constitute .3 serious threat to health. But in late veara the dis- trict had grown so fast thst both water and sewage wyltems were neceua now. Mr. l:.y!:qrle MacDonald. M.l..A.. was called on as a former mavor of 'Charlo ctown for an opinion as to obta nlnir water. He stated that as the public knew water in this city was administered by I Board or Water Commlaalonera. -.r.tlrclv divorced from the City Council and election separately. But. he said It was his hndcrtitand- log that in order to establish water :.nd mmre in Parlrdnle. it would be nt-rosary to stagger I series of -rumninv stations screen to the North River. This he pointed out would cost so much an to be almost prohibitive and gha mentioned. it previously named figure of t'l50.000 which he believed to be too low I11 utlrnatri for the project. Mr. Rogcrson, it-hose election was without opposition. succeeds Mr John Leard. who retired from the board of commissioners at last nlghtls meeting. The other com- missioners are E. C. Wood and Arthur Simmons. The report of Mr. Nelson Mnl. yneaux. village clerk. showed the village to be in good financial standing and free of debt. The Crapaud Fire Department was summoned only once during the year. the call being to Albany where the department was instru- menial in saving a lame potato warchouse that was on fire. During the year the Fire De- partment added 100 feet of hose to its t-quipment. Considerable discusgion took place rcgardliig a. contract' he- twcen the village and the Mari- time Electric Company. regarding street lighting. The vlllaizc had made a contract with the company. to supply strcet. lihting, but rc-1 rently the company informed the; village that the rate would be rats; cd. Strong opposition to this in- crease was expressed at. the meet- ing by citizens who felt that the company wan breaking its contract with the village by raising the rate. Further investigation into matter by the councillors was quested by the meeting. The village has recently joined the Town Planning Organization ant-'. advantages and henettts of belonging to the group were ex- plained. It. is expected that within itvo or three weeks the commissioners will call a general meeting of resi- dents to discuss the business of the village for the coming year. this re- tlom of the village. As a result the Commissioners had approached the Minister of the Department. admin- istering the Act. Hon. Eugene Cui- ien. and had received his approval of the project. However, the move apparently was opposed by a large number of residents. The feeling was ex- pressed by many that money should not be spent on llghts'un- til such time as water was obtain- ed. One speaker stated that be- cause of the writer going bad in the pump a resident family with small children had heen without. water for two days. Other speakers felt that the pos- sibility of getting water was so dim or so far in the future that there was no need to deprive the village of the advantage of street lighting in the meantime. l A notice of motion to rescind. the order for the installation of the light: had been filed with the commissioners prior to the meet- ing. it. was presented by Mr. Dix- on but was ruled out. of order by Chairman Cook. Some bitter de- bate with several participants on either side occurred and climaxed in Mr. Dixon appealing the chair- man's ruling. He was supported by the meeting and later when the chairman putpttic contenticus moi- lon it was upheld by a count which was stated as being 61 to 42 There was c question of the exact fl is it was it standing vote and some present. apparently were undecided and after atlhdlng sat. down or reversed the pro- cedure. i After this was settled the meet- ing settled down to its annual bualnaaa.
