With his load ringing laugh, and his long sunny hair! Do they swell on the breeze yet, or float through the air.’ Is there any bright land. ‘mid the lands of the earth. That holds the lost cbikl of my heart and my hearth? I hve set by the lire when theold men have said, There be eyes ofthe living that look on the dead. 01 tell iuo. ye seers in search of the tomb, Do my fair son in its valley of gloom.’ Iethere any pale boy with u look of the sea ‘MU tbat people of shades, who is waiting for me.’ Mine e es havegroivn dim. int; 0. that morn when he left us! And eeen little th.tt’s bright since they ooked upon And my heart. in its dullness, hath learned to forget But the light of that morning shines clear to it yet: No record is lost of the bright sunny (lay, When passed my fair boy like a spirit tiway. \Ve waited—-bow long! but we waited in rain! And we looked over land and we looked over main, And ships, 0! how many came borne from the sea, That brought comfort to others, but sorrow to me. In all those gay ships, 0! there answer was none To the mother who asks, if she yet have a son! They tell me of countries be end the broad sea, Where stars look on otherst t look not on me; Where the flowers are more sweet, and the waters more bright, And they hint that he dwells in those valleys of light- Thst he rests in a home with some fair foreign bride, This world isa wide one!--why is it so wide? But they surely forget—whieh my sailor does not- tI’m sittin whole years in my lone little cot. He knows, O! Ire knows, III may, I shall wait Till I hear his clear shout at the low garden gate; He is sure his sad mother will strive not to die Till the latch has been raised by her lost sailor boy. I believe that he lives. \Vere he laid in the mould, There's a pulse in my heart would be silent and cold: Which awoke at his birth, and, through good and through ill, Ilas played in its do the. and is pla ing there still. When its star shall ave set, then I at tide will be dry, the widow be sure where to look for her boy! Shut the door! The winds are blowing-freezing—ivhy stand there talking—talking—why don’t you shut the door.’ " Though you, my friend, may boost a gifted mind, A soul of honor, and ti taste re ned, These biller times, we seek for something more, The first of virtues is—to shut the door.‘ ilarirtics. New use rott IcI:.—Tbe Scientific men of France are at pre- sent speculating on a recent instance ofa young man brought to life uller being frozen up eleven months on the Alps. It has given rise to a revived belief in the theory, that life can be suspended at pleasure and criminals are about to be deman o the Government to be frozen on experiment. The reader will already have inferred ivliat a reliefthis olfers to such unhappy ladies as lind themselves not cori- temporary with the hearts they sigh to win.—'I‘hey have only to be iced till overtaken. IVo sliou d add, however, that the above is by no means a joke. The blood ofa living man was infused into the veins ofa frozen youth end he moved and spoke. The exper- imenti was afterwards tried on a bare, frozen for the purpose, with corn etc succe . 'l‘ e Ilonie Journal suggests the idea. of putting the discovery into practical use, that is. put out $590 at interest, and have yourself packed in ice, end stay frozen, with suspended life, till it amounts to a fortune. TEN DAYS LATER FROM CALIFORNIA. The steamer Daniel Webster arrived at New York on tho Ilili .Ian., bringing over 300 passengers, and advices from San F ranchi- coto the tbth Dec. She brought $580,000 in freight and in the bands of passengers, but no mail came by this steamer. Paosrucr or srmI:its—I1voiAiv Dis-ruruiAr«crzs.—Since the sailing of the lust steamer, there has been considerable news in- teresting to the United States. Rain has fallen sufficiently to enri- ble miners in the dry diggings to prosecute their labors with energy and elfect. Many who had large piles of dirt accumulated. have commenced washing with great success, so that, nltlrou h opera- tions in the rivers have nearly ceased, there will be little iminuiiori of the amount produced during the winter. Large some have been refused for piles ofdirt, which a short time since could have been purchased for a trifling amount comparative . Great excitement has been produced in the Southern mines, by the discovery of richer di gings than over before opened. In one week, and in a hole a few eet square, between $200,000 and 3300,00 were extracted. The news getting abroad, in another week could be seen at the new diggings .1 town of severalthousand inhabitants, and the country for miles around was eta out in mining clnirnr. The flourishing town of Placerville has nearly doubled its popula- tion, owing to recent discoveries of rich diggings in its vicinity. Extensive operations are being entered into b uartz miners. Leads of the most surprising richness are almost daily being dis- covered, and companies almost as frequently formed to work them. The most ponderous machinery is being conveyed to the rriost rug- ged portions of mountain country; so we may safely calculate on curing the crash oftho mighty engine and the din of the thrifty towns end villages, where a few short months since our cars would have been regalod only by the bowling of the wolf and the grisly bear. When the mountains, which are now covered with snow, shall cast aside their icy ermcnts, and the sun of spring again greet us, then shall all these wonderful changes be accomplished, and t world be again stricken with wonder at the almost iucalculable pro- ductions of our golden mountainl. The great Bear River and Auburn Canal will be completed by the first of January next, a period of little more than live rnontbe from its commencement. This cut work of private enterprise gives emplo meat to l0,000 laborers, and will add millions to the present pr acts of our state. The news from the southern nice of the state is less cheering. The Indians, from the Gila to til: settlements near the Pacific are reported to be combined to drive away the entire white opuletion. Attacks were made on unolfending citizens. some o in cm ve been killed. Cattle and horses have been driven oil’; in short, a ge- neral system of murder and plunder seems to have been adopted by the luv On hearing of this combination. expresses were for- warded to the military commanders in California and the Governor, yiug for aid, which was ‘promptly reepo ed to. Gen. Hitchcock b: seat all his disposable ores, and such supplies of arms and am- munition as the case roqdred. The Governor also ordered out a ' , s cotnmnioned the far-famed Col. Ileys asits com- mueder. Should the Indians show themselves to the gallant Run- gsru, they will be summarily dealt with. 6 There is a knitting machine in operation in Pbiladelphisi, which knits three hundred and eighty stiches at each turn of e etlull creek. which crank may be easily turned by hand from one hundred to one hundred and Ill revolutions per minute. making from forty to sin ihoim stitches psi minute, or at the rate of sbout three mi lions per hour.
