The program of the Shaw Government, built within the means of the Province, and ‘geared to meet its needs today and in the future, is one of educational expansion. Opportunity and skills for our young people, and consideration .-for Island parents who have the costly respon- ~ sibility of educating them. Here are a few policies receiving attention for the imme- diate future: Increasing Subsidies on School Books “The increase from $40,000 to $200,000 pro- vided by the Conservative Government since 1959 proves that, ge always, the promise is being carried out Bring Education Standards _to_ah Even—— Higher Level Increasing teachers: grants to s¢hool districts will enable local boards to retain highly qualified téachers. Assistance for University Education The Government, not parents, must try to shoulder-an increasing share of-the-high:costs of university education. Beginning this fall, the Shaw Government will pay a grant to St. Dunstan’s and Prince of Wales equal to $300 for each university student. In addition, a development grant of $125,000—will go to Prince of Wales. Increase Equalization. Grants Equalization Grants to regional, consolidated and elementary school districts were $35,000 °* in- 1959. The Shaw Goverriment will grant approximately a half-million dollars in these ants: in the next school term. Increase Capital Grants to Consolidated Schools _ The present capital grant is $6,000 per class- room. Effective. immediately, the grant will , be increased to°$19,000 per classroom for permanent type construction. This new program is only possible because P.E.I. has made so much basic progress in the past. seven years under the capable lead- ership of the Conservative Government. _ This basic progress has already brought substantial benefits to the economy. The .further.development.of.our-tesources, and~ of the industrial economy, will provide the expansionary @limate and the financial means - to support our new services to people. Moreover, the Shaw Government has proven to investors, to other levels of government, and to our own people, that it is a govern- ment of good management.
