A' NOBLE EXAMPLs.——1f'tliei'e be one object more Worthy a another ofthe exertions and generosity ofthe Philan- firepist and the Christian, it is the spread of Education rang the rising generation. To this end, in all civilized Monies, men whose names have gone down to posterity severed and blessed, have contributed theirinfluence and TI - fortunes; and it is to this exalted liberality that the ,uedStiites owe many of'their splendid Temples of Edn— Hn. Appeals to the Legislature, in this behalf, have been common in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick; but We -ve too high an opinion of both of these colonies to sup- ‘se that their gradual advancement, and the multiplication ‘Vfw'ealthy men, will not be characterised by a liberality in '9 cause of education fully equal, if not superior, to that which has distinguished more prosperous states and older i, ntries. As the pioneer among Colonial Founders of grandma l W ' a l Institutions, we have tnuch pride in noticing the home of' Joseph Allison, Esq, of Sackville, who has erected ml endowed an Academy on the boundary line (il'Nova rscotia and New Brunswick. The Editor ol'thc St. John ,Mediator recently paid a visit to this institution, and de- ’ ‘ rihes its architectural appearance as highly classical, and tale ‘thc “princely lilieriility” of Mr. Allison, in expending ~ eiv'lit or ten thousand pounds for the cultivation of ' initial intellect—the refinement ol'tliose ennohling tv‘lti'ch render mun supecior'eo all the other tribes ninial creation. S. This is a very v'ili'liiiiffi; document, and should be fbund in the hands ofever furii in the Colony who has the prosperity of the Island it 11881:: and who really desires to ameliorate his condition and td promote his personal and pecuniary interests. The, Tariff lately passed by the Imperial Parliament has opened up a new branch of Trade between the Mother Countr ' and her traus-atlantic Colonies, which We hope Will ere )lon be largely participated in by Prince Edward lslniid. g, It is who lameiited, that in a country possessed of such great agricultural capabilities as this Islaiid is acknowlcdned on all hands to be favoured with by a bountiful Pi'ovitleifce many persons should have so long neglected their triaiii interests—arising from the cultivation of the soil—for the prosecution of'a business at all times precarious, and of late years extremely disastrous to almost every one who has en- gaged in it—we mean the shipbuilding and lumbering busi- ness. We have reason, however, to believe, that our popula- tion are rapidly improving in the science of Agriculture; party politics engage much less of the public attention than formerly; large tracts of fertile land are annually reclaimed from the forest; new and flourishing settlements are spring- ing up in all directions; and we rejoice in the prospect now afforded of a new and profitable outlet for our surplus pro- duce. It must, however, be borne in mind, that if we would enjoy a share ofthe benefits likely to accrue to the Colonies from the operation of the new Tariff, above alluded to, great care must be bestowed on the culture and preparation ofthe articles intended for export, to the English market especi- ally; but we’can see no solid reason why, with proper atten- tion to these important objects, we may not make a profitable business ofit as well as our neighbours. \Ve intend printing the document above referred to, on a se- parate sheet, .which we shall be happy to dispose of to Agri-. cultural Societies, and to persons interested in the sub- required, shall be supplied at a very low price. The Letters of' A CONS'I‘ITUTIONALIST, which originally appeared in the columns of the Nmmscotimi, and which can- sed no small stir among the “Ohstructives,” as a certain class of persons are termed in the neighbouring Province, :1 short time since, have just been republished by Mr. Nugent, the. present Editorand Proprietor oftliat paper, in the form ofa pamphlet, at 50s. per hundred, or 75. (5d. per dozen. The report ofthe loss oftwo vessels from thislsland, com- manded by two brothers ofthe name of Leblanc, near the Gut ofCanso, as stated in our last, turns out to be in some measure incorrect. It would appear that several vessels, each commanded by a master oftlie name of Leblanc, left this Island about the same time, two bound for Halifax, and somefor Newfoundland and other ports—the two former have arrived at their destination—one oftliose bound for Newfoundland, the Trish-it will be seen, on reference to our shipping list, was unfiirtiinately lost, with all the crew. On Monday evening last, a Ball and Supper were given, to at numerous party, at Government House, by His Excel- lency Sir Henry and Lady Huntley, it being the anniversary of His Excellency’s arrival and assumption of the Govern- ment oftbis Island. \Vo understand the party separated at an early hour the following morning, highly gratified wit To THE EDITOR or Tits COLONIAL’HERKLD.
