Dear Sin,—Although the contents of this letter nay vot be of much interest to 1, Flora McIntyre; 2, Fia:k | the general public, yet, wishing to state a few facts to the worthy people compos ’ ing the congregation of the First Metho i Edward i dist Chureh, in this city, I beg to use the columns of your newspaper for the pur- pose as the rimplest and most direct way pose ! of doing so. Some tithe ago two gentiemeét appointed by the Methodist building Co omittee called at my office and stated that they contemplated placing a new ceiling in their church and that a8 many of the con- gregation admired the groived roof of St Paui’s Chureb, which { had designed, they would deem it a favour if I would m akea plan of what I considered to be the best treatment for their roof, 11 competition with other architecte. Onmy asking the terms of competition they said that it would be treated fairly avd justly and that if my plans were the best I should be employed to carry out the work. I agreed to the conditions sent and when the several competing plans sent ia by myself and others had been duly considered by the committee I was notified that my plans were accepted as the best and was instruct- ed to prepare working drawings and speci- fications for immediate tender upon th m by the contractors. The committee soon received tenders varying very little from my original estimate of the cost, and for some time I daily expected the order that work should proceed; kut 1 found out that the committee had afterwards sent an order to an architect in Toronto to prepare new plans after tle competition had been decided in ni favour, As 1 had prepared a plan that I honestly think will make the interior of the building one of the most beautiful churcb- es in Canada, as it is new one of the best acoustically, I was nota little disappointed, and I consider that I have been treated cruelly aad uofairly. The architect in question was supposed to be eminext ou account of his residence } in Toronto, while I, on account of being satisfied with the conditions of jife in Charlottetows, was supposed to lack that distinction. Someday, however, & bope to meet this architect on his own ground, and [ am not at ail afraid of tbe result, judging by a comparison between his design for the Mthodist Church and my owr. I consider the proposal to ‘nse plaster with heavy mouldings over suck a wide ceiling is dangereus, and the effeot will be heavy and clumey, while a light greined wooden ceiling similar in griveiple of construction to $t Paul's <burch would preserve the geweral effect of width acd Joftimess which the isterior now possesses and would be perfectly safe and durable. The first reason for enaking any changein theeeiling is the present danger~ ous condition of tle plastered roof, and I fail to see the logic of adding to the pre cent danger by gluing upa tew tons more of plastered mouldings. It was not many veats ago that the priest in the Hope River } ®. C. Church was very nearly killed hy a portion of the plastered ceiling falling from ‘forty feet above bis head and striking the seactnary floor some four or five! inches behind bis head. {In that churek { suspicions looking cracks bed been in the; roof fora numberof years, but nobody thought of mmediate dangerwatil sudden~ ly the plaster fell. In the Methodist - reiling a great deal ‘of dampness hes been noticeable for a long Kime, awd in places of coarse the nails hold. ‘ag the lethewe position will be cor-eded, bv rust and ere of little value to noid the material up eothat there is no knowing when @ portionof it willdrop. &f this occurs when the obarch is fail of people there will be very serious consequences. I further peiated out in a Jetter to the’ osmmittee with accompanying Fections | shewing diagrams of direct anu reflected reys of sound, the reasons | for the present alwost perfect perfect acoustic conditions of the interior of the charch and the damage that will ovcur if @ series of plastered arches and flat speadre! surfaces are thrown across the ir- terior spaceoverthe present palpit and if the curved ceiling is torn down from the west end, all of whick is proposed by the present Toroaic plans, and evidences in my mind tonat the eminence of the Toronto architect, in the present instance, is sot to. be clussed in his knowledge of a acoustics I remain, ‘Yours respectfully, W. C. Hares, A. BR. C.A., Architict. THOSE FIREMEN’S COATS, Str,—Now that the Councillors want our Votes, perhaps they can persuade them= selves to buy rubber coats for our firemen. A smal! town like Summerside can do it; why can’ Charlottetown? At Sunday’s fire many of our firemen had their best clothes spoiled with water, smoke and cinders because of the niggardly disposi- tion of the city council. This matter was brought before the council two years ago by councillor Tanton. Since then we have been sickened with promises. They can haggle over this trifle for years, pretending economy, but they can epend plenty of money to buy champagne with. If you treat our firemen like dogs, you must expect them to bite like dogs; so keep your eyes on their teeth. We must bave those coats, or know the reason why.
