Railway Board _ Dismisses Application (C. l‘. By Guardian's Special Wire) OTIMWA, Jan. %——A7lDi,i‘lQl‘ mile-post in the fight of the dairy farmers and poultrymen of British Columla for lower freight rates on feed grain and mill feeds brought in from the prairies was reached when the Board of Railway Oom- missloners dismissed their applica- tion. It. was a close decision for three members oi’ the board favored dismissal and two were for granting it Under the rate schedule 100 pounds of grain or grain products is carried from Calgary or Edmon- ton to Vancouver for 2O cents if the product is to be exported. 1f, how- ever, the grain or millfeed is to be used for feeding purposes the rate was around 40 cents per 100 pounds. Following a protest against this variation, the case was argued be- fore the railway commission in 1929 and an application to have all du- mestic grain ratios from the prairies to British Columbia the same as the export rates was dismissed. “ The appeal was carried to the Cabinet Council and although the appeal was dismissed, a Dominion- PIOVlIICiBi Conference took the mat- ter up and the railways agreed to put l.“ lower tentative rates, making the rate from Calgary and- Edmon- ton tn Vancouver 30 cents as com- pared with the 20-cent export rate. This was accepted by the various provinces. Contending that the domestic rates were still too high, Thomas Reid, MP. for New Westminster ap- pealed on behalf of the dairy farm- ers and poultry farmers of the Fraser Valley to have domestic ralcs on feed grains and millfeeds the same as the export rates. This was slightly different from the 1020 application which ‘ncluded all grains. Alberta Joined the can, urging that the domestic rats be not more than three cents greater than the export rates. The case was argued this summer in Ottawa and lasted several days. it resulted in three judgments being written which were made public over the week-end. The majority Judgment dis ing the application was agreed to b! Assistant Ohisf Commissioner B. J. McLean and Commissioner Stone but was dis- sented to by Commisiortcr T. C. Norris.
