"In the face of declining stu- dent attendances I would like to know why four or five teachers at initial salaries of 53.000 each were appointed last year," he ask- ed. "I would also like to know who made the recommendations for "the salary increases last year. "Did they come from the De- puty Minister?" asked the Doc- or. When Premier Jones "No", Dr. MacMiIIan the deviation from the usual procedure. "In every other de- partment salary increases are re- commended by the deputy min- isters." be pointed out. "Why was one teacher recom- mended for an increase of 51100 while all the Catholic teachers to- gether received only S675 among them?" he asked. Premier. Jones, who is acting Minister of Education replied that "We do not distinguish between Protestant and Catholic teachers. We judge them solely on their ability. The increases are granted according to the recommendations of the principal and vice-prin- cipal." replied pointed out Vice-Principal's Appointment: Dr. MacMillan then charged that Prince of Wales College, a non-sectarian institution was be- lni: sectarianized. "Why was there- not a Catholic vice-principal ap- pointed when Professor Blan- chard retircd," he asked. "Was there one fit," demanded Premier Jones. "Yes there was." replied the Doctor. "The trouble is the Col- lege is being run by the Big Four -and it is headed for ruin under the present management. 17 students to one teacher, I draw the inference that some are not doing much work." Announces Committee It was IIINI that Prcmicr Jones announccrl the intentions of the Government to form a com- mittee. In addition to looking into the course of studies it will also study the application of Gov- ernment grants to the College. The Premier pointed out that this was at plan which was hatch- ed solely by the Government. In speaking of the appointment of teachers he stated that they wanted somebody with a proper scholastic attainment "not just B.A.'s which are a dime a dozen." He also added that there were one or two good men of Dr. MacMlllan's religious denomin- atlon who showed real promise at the College, one of whom was Mr. Coylc. Dr. MacMillan also crltized the use of the Gavernemtn grants at P. W. C. He maintained that the grants were given only for pur- poses of maintenance and not scholarships. Besides he did not think that the scholarships or bursaries should be given to only third and fourth year students. Premier Jones replied that there were no strings attached to the grants in any way. "But they could not be given to first and second year students as these students were ionly in High School and the provisions of the grants stated that they must be uscd for university years," he aintorl.
